The only real requirements are SATA and 2.5" form factor.

Not really. 5400rpm matches OEM spec but you can go 7200rpm if you don't mind a little more heat for the small bump in speed. Only other thing to worry about only applies to 500GB HDD's physical dimensions.

So the best is to stay with 5400rpm. Is that the the same spec of the ones that came with the PS3.

Its not worth the little better speed for the extra risk of damaging your hardware.

If you're looking to keep all the data you have currently on your HDD the best thing to do is run the Backup Utility on the PS3 with an external HDD or just save your game saves to a flash drive. Depends on what you're looking to do.

dude you can if you want to get an external HDD....i would just stick to the INternal HDD....get what ever GB's you feel is comfortable...but get the HDD that is 7200rpm 2.5" sata.....simple as that...very ez to replace your HDD in your PS3...go to youtube if you cant figure it out...big bump in speed from the standard 5400rpm drive that comes in the PS3....

Not 100% sure if it will recognize the OEM HDD as a generic storage device. The safest bet is to back up whatever data you want transferred before even disconnecting the HDD. Once you disconnect the HDD you won't be able to reconnect it without needing to do an initial format. Instead of the cable you could always just get a $20 enclosure so you always have an external HDD around for game save back ups.

I dont believe so. I do believe backing up to a usb device is the first step in replacing the HD.

RULE OF THUMB _-_ Always back up FIRST before doing anything to anything with data storage.!

i would only put a 7200 RPM drive in my PS3 if i had the 40gb, as those use a 65nm cell CPU, and without any PS2 chips its rly way cooler then my MGS4 bundle, whcih for some reason still have 90nm cells. also if you buy that hard drive the pS3 will reduce the Sata II speed from 3gbs to 1.5gbs as the PS3 was made to handle sata 1 only

I can't believe people still talk about 7200 RPM drives like this. 7200 RPM 2.5" notebook drives produce no more heat, they don't even lessen battery life in notebooks. The only thing you gain by buying a 7200 RPM drive is faster load times on some games. The only damage it will do is to your wallet.

Thank you, finally somebody is using logic. Bigger number doesn't always mean better performance. Maybe the people won't waste the money on 7200rpm and RUIN their ps3. Thanks again. Also, what is OEM and do I need it in buying a ps3?
