Is it true that some PS3 games cache memory onto your hard-drive to make loading times faster for the slow Blu-Ray drive?

Yes it's like roughly 2gigs- 5gigs per games, you can only cache maybe 30 games tops on a 60gig drive. It's less caching and more like installing with most games.

Genji does 2gigs, VF5 does like 5gigs. Caching is just the BS name they made to trick you, it's really just installing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_%28seventh_generation%29 per the mighty wiki, the BD drive runs at 72mbits/s, while the other consoles dvd drive runs at a range of (65.6–132 Mbit/s) which means BD is a more consistant speed, while the other tends to vary all over the spectrum

oblivion takes about 5gb. this is one of the few things i don't like about the ps3. it makes the 20GB version pretty much useless unless you upgrade it or you only plan on playing 3-5 games at a time, and thats also considering that you don't plan on having any videos/music/pictures etc. i bought the 20GB version thinking it would suffice, but after hearing games are taking several GB of space, i quickly bought an 80GB drive.

i sure hope this continues... i'm kind of worried most developers will take advantage of this, and i really hope that it stays under 5gb/game. i think anything over 1-2gb is already too much.

Same here.  I have the 20gb version and i dont really want to upgrade.  I would rather spend that money on a new game.

can you delete the cache without deleting the save file??? Meaning delete it, then reinstall it later and continue where you left off??

If Resistance is any indication, then yes you can do this.  PS3 has separate folders for the cached game data and the save data.Â
