If the flash drive isn't even being displayed on your PS3 it is definitely a formatting issue. Well either that or the drive is broken.

Yea, aside from the FAT32 formatting, it also needs to be structured properly for the PS3 to read it, just like the PSP memory sticks. Do what this guy is saying ^^^^

I've got something close to the same problem you have. I have an MP3 player that's 256Megs in size, yet the PS3 only says it's 14Megs in size. It was fine prior to the last Firmware update.

i had the same problem, ratteled my head for hours but for me it turned out to be so simple in the end, so its worth a try for anyone else insert your usb flash drive into computer then go to my computer and right click your usb flash drive, hit properties and go to sharing and make sure your computer aint being selfish hogging the usb flash drive all to it self and set it to work for everyone, everyone being computers lol hope this works for you guys

oh and before i shared the file i also downloaded hp usb disk storage format tool, hit it up on google and download it, deletes any hidden files and softwares that are in the way of letting your ps3 recognise the flash drive or hard-drive, that along with my other bit of advice should work for you hopefully

It should just pop up, try blowing on the end of the USB aswell as the USB port on your PS3. then go to what ever section you want (eg. music for mp3's) press triangle on the USB and display all. If that doesn't work, try returning your Thumb drive for another.
