Why would I buy 2 right now if I might not need a second for god knows how long?

Stick with one, why waste the money. Put that money into some sort of investment, that way when you actually need the money you may have doubled or even tripled your money.

I have 2 fat 60gb consoles right now. One is North American and the other is Japanese. My friend sold me his Japanese model for 50 bucks when he moved back home.

We have a "fat", we will buy a slim. Not for just in case; so we can have a PS3 in each room with a flat panel. Sharing is nice, but having two consoles is easier.

If you ever buy a PS3 for a "Backup", there's probably some sort of chemical imbalance inside your body.

Listen on the serious side, No thats a bad idea because we all know tech hardware like this goes down in price all the time...if your PS3 ever fails, THEN buy a backup...because who knows, by then it might be 199.99 for a PS3.

I have considered buying a slim PS2 for backup. 99 bucks, and my old one is like 10 years old. Not quite ready (rich) enough to consider a backup PS3 though.

I have 2 BC MGS4 PS3's 80gb and I don't feel I wasted money. I have one in the living room and one in the bedroom as I will use that moreso for watching blu-ray discs. I like that I can play PS2 games and since my extended warranties will replace it with a current version(store warranties) it is great having a backup. I don't really want to pay for a refurbed model if one of mine breaks. Since the PS3 has dual purposes it is fine to have 2 for me. I would get a slim also but I only have a 1 bedroom condoand no issues with my current ones to justify that purchase. Now I have a Wii that just collects dust and I regret that purchase. Well at least my g/f uses wii fit. LOL.

I just fixed my PS3 60GB model the new firmware fixed the issue of it not reading PS3 games. I am currently using an 80GB SKU but i am keeping both just because.
