Not particularly, I can think of a couple of dozen games more violent than this. The game is violent but it's a bit cartoonish and there's nothing particularly bloody, gorey, or brutal about it. It's like a PG-13 movie or TV-14 show. Outlast, for example, is way more grossly violent.

Really. Show me a TV-14 or even a PG-13 publication that presents knife stabs to the neck and full blown headshot executions, more less the bashing of heads into solid objects to make skulls explode.

Yes. This game is violent as it clearly depicts fatal brutality between humans in a realistic fashion and sense.

@fred_flatulence: You can smash a person's face in with a brick or smash their head against a wall. So yes.

Hannibal (TV-14 show, way more violent than TLOU) and Lord of the Rings (or Taken, or any PG-13 horror movie, etc.)

Obviously you haven't watch very many shows or movies

To me it presents violence in visuals that are emphasized greatly by the sound. I don't know if it's realistic, but it feels real enough. I'd say it's a violent game, but it fits with the genre and setting.

If you're going to try and give this game to a 14 year old - I would say don't. It's rated "Mature" for a reason. Although to be honest I think some shooters, like Gears, is more gory. But Last of Us is more realistic I would say.

How is it cartoonish?....Outlast is a horror game though, so that's going to be grossly more violent and gory for a scare factor.

It's pretty brutal. There's mutilations, lots of blood, up-close executions... Definitely a grim and violent game, but it fits the tone of the game very well.

And it's an R-rated level of violence if you're wanting some sort of comparison in that regard. I just see someone trying to argue that it's on level with a PG-13 movie or TV-14 show and I definitely disagree.

@KHAndAnime: Never seen Hannibal, but I think TLOU is way more graphically violent than LOTR. I think a typical 12+ gamer is fine for TLOU, but not appropriate for like an 8 year old.

It's unrealistic, that's how it's cartoonish. The majority of graphic violence is against zombies (as human as Orcs if you ask me) and the violence in the game isn't particularly detailed or gorey. Compared to Red Orchestra 2, it looks like an arcade game when you kill off people. And in that game, people moan and cry on the ground after they're wounded.

In LOTR you see tons of stabbings, beheadings, crushings - lots of graphic death of both human and orc variety. Lots more of it too.

Yes, it's violent and not for children if that's what you're asking. And gore=/=violence.

I find TLoU to be most disturbing in its depiction of violence because (aside from a few melee infected finishers) it's NOT all that gory. But it is animated and portrayed in a realistic context. Strangling people out has a huge feeling of humanity to it, and that's what makes it disturbing. Shooting Hunters point blank in the face as they put up their hands and plead for their life.....I would like to hear which other games do this.

It also includes torture. It's not a game meant for younger audiences in any way, shape, or form.

Gore and violence in LoU is intimate, you see the darker side of humanity along with brutal imagery. Outlast has high levels of gore, but most of it is disconnected from the player because you are never actually performing the violence yourself and it's often out of your control. There is not a single moment of violence in LoU that is superfluous.

I still don't know how Hannibal got a TV-14 rating. Great show though!

It's a gritty game that takes place in a post-apocalyptic America. Post-apocalypse is violent. This game is violent. The violence fits the game, it fits the scenario. In games like these, violence is important.

@KHAndAnime: I think the actual game is quite realistic. Of course not in the aspect that it's zombie/plant type of creatures you're mostly fighting. There's some games out there that are more gory for sure. But I still wouldn't let a kid play this game. And I wouldn't describe the game as cartoonish. But that's my personal opinion.

Yes, it's violent. You can use guns, knives, bricks, poles, bombs, boards, etc to assault/kill people. Zombies can essentially rip your throat out.

It's definitely not designed for kids.

That said, to me, all the violence has a point, there's not a lot of violence-for-the-sake-of-violence.

It has some of the more unsettling depictions of violence in a game. There were times that I just felt uneasy about what just played out on screen.

Anybody of you guys think Lego games are violent ? You hit, blast and blow other characters literally breaking them down to pieces, quite gruesome.

It's violent. Sometimes, I played it at night and though it's not a "scary" violent per se, the reality and pure environment of fear it creates is pretty strong. I suggest you don't give it to a 12-14 year old.

Yup there's GOOOORE. Although there MIGHT be an option to take it off along with blood, don't take my word for it though.
