Hi PS3 guys,

I am planning to purchase a PS3 very soon. The 12gb super slim PS3 looks very appealing because of its low price but I am not sure if 12GB is enough harddisk space. Are there any games that require mandatory 12gb+ installs? And is the disk drive loud if you don't install the games? The xbox 360 runs like a lawn mower if you don't install the games.

You're going to need a lot more memory just to fall back on, but it really depends on what games you are buying, for example Fallout 3 is like 4500 MB (4.5 GB), I have the Slim 160 GB, and that's plenty for me, still have 80 something left, since I bought it for the reasons I just mentioned above, it's good to have some memory to fall back on in case you want PSN downloads, PS1 classics, etc Some games don't even have the Install feature, like Mafia 2, Godfather 2, various sports titles, and some others I forget.

If you download a game like DC universe On-line then that will take up most of that 12GB flash memory. GT5 is another game with a large data install. There a few games that really take up 4Gb or so. You may be only be able to install 3 or 4 games tops.

12GB of flash memory is not enough. The PS3 20GB HDD model was discontinued after only 6 months. So why Sony brought out this model with even less storage is a mystery.

I do not see this model lasting very long. Or I thought Sony would have priced this at $149.99

A ton of games require installs, much more than on the 360. I believe that's due to the PS3's slow read speed because it was built when Blu-ray was new and expensive. The 12GB is there just to have a cheaper model that people can buy a HDD for themselves. If you plan on downloading any games, you'll need double the required space before you're allowed to download them. For example, a 10GB game will require 20GB of free space until it is installed. I think it's because the PS3 first downloads the game, and then installs it, which requires the same amount of space. I suggest getting something 320GB HDD or more if you plan on getting PS+. It is probably cheaper to buy a 12GB and a 500GB hard drive than it is to buy the 500GB model.

Definetely not enough. You should either buy the new toaster 500gb PS3 or a standard slim with the 320gb drive

HELL no. Unless you see yourself buying, then finishing, then uninstalling only one game at a time... As others have said, a lot of games require an install. This model might be fine if you were only into CoD, and that's about all you intend to do with it, ever. I know people like that, who are only playing the new version of CoD, but if you see yourself wanting to play a few games in rotation, this model most-likely won't fit your needs. I have a 120G, and that works fairly well for a busy gamer.

:)

I thought 12G was a misprint when I first saw the announcement... Or that someone was just being absurd to be absurd...

Nope, that's not big enough.

While most games take only a neglligible amount of space, there are a lot of games that have large installs, usually a gig or two, and that space gets chewed up pretty quickly with updates and patches. Having only 12GBs will just limit what games you can play. Hell, with 12 gigs you pretty much won't have room for DLC or PSN games,

That's why i traded in my fat 40G PS3 for a 320G slim. I had too many games with large installs. Ghost Recon Future Soldier has a mandatory 6.5 gig install. To me that's ridiculous.

Alright, it seems like the 12gb is not enough, I'll get the 500gb super slim or the 320gb slim. Thanks for the advice guys!

That isn't enough. I have a 120GB PS3 and only have about 35GB left, and that's even when deleting stuff.

To be honest it is enough if you don't plan on downloading any big games, you would just have to delete game data everytime you wanted to play a new game.

Waaaaaiiit...They made 12GB ps3s?

WTF? Haha

Go for that 250GB new slim...it comes with UC3 and it is a fairly reasonable price at 270$

I have a 120GB slim and it served me well for the last 3 years.

Not nearly enough. I'm a big fan of "overkill" where I feel you can never have a big enough HDD. I'm going to upgrade my 500 GB to a 1 TB before the end of the year.

Not enough, especially not for a gamer. Hell I downloaded a game today that requires much more than 12 gigs to just properly install.

That model is for those that are going to buy their own HDD, and stick it in there. Which, really, is the smartest buy.

My 160GB slim was full after half a year / a year. I do play a lot of games though.

12GB is absolutely nothing, especially with that many mandatory installs.

It would only be fine if you own 1-5 games for it. Anything else will be a pain deleting and reinstalling unless you put an extra HDD in there or only play games with small installs (of which there are quite a few. but still).

Not enough at all, ever no matter what type of gamer you are, 3 game installs would ruin you, the ps3 needs the same install size free to install, most games have to be installed, so 12gb will be gone in a heart beat, unless you plan on playing a couple of games at a time then delete them then play some more, or like people are saying buy the 12gb for cheap then go buy a good sized harddrive, it may save you a few quid if u can find a hd for cheap

NOPE-Cos most games are around 5GB to install,so you'll soon tire of installing, deleting, installing games.

Shop around and spend your money wisely on a current slim model, the 320Gb you can get at bargain price now.

If you game with ANy regularity then it's a definite no. The only scenario 12gb would work is if you only use it as a media player, maybe stick with only 1 game that you play at a time.
