would even pay for such service

It's always seemed very weird to me as to why they don't let you. I know I shouldn't be talking about the "other side" in here but on the Xbox you can change your name and the first time it's free, after that they charge you for it. Either way I really think Sony should follow suit.
You're not alone. PlayStation users have been asking for this feature for several years now. Why Sony has chosen not to allow it, even if for a fee like their competition does, I have no idea.
I believe that, sooner or later, Sony will figure out a way to make this happen. Just a gut feeling, nothing more.
They must be having some issue with implementing it, because I have no idea why they wouldn't at this point. They could make a decent chunk of money by charging $5-10 to change a username. Fortunately, this doesn't bother me as I'm fine with the username I created over 4 years ago and even use it for most sites today. I would even change my GameSpot name to it if I could.

It's great having cash right ;)
you can just make a new account, and get 2 weeks of ps plus for free, thats what I did.
Yeah and lose all your trophies and hard work you've spent over the years achieving them. Yeah thanks, but no thanks. I have over 900+ trophies, no way I'd lose them all just to have a new name. Even if my name was Barbie-Lover I wouldn't give a damn.

I am not going to waste my 2500 trophies because of username either
and that is why I would pay for such service
IF SONY WOULD GIVE US SUCH A THING
I wonder if they could implement something along the lines of what Steam does.
My account name to for log in purposes and Steam ID # will forever be the same, but I can freely change my profiles name at will. This is nice as this is what people search for me with and also what is displayed for stat and achievement websites. So even if you have an embarrassing/unwanted account name you are free to change the name people see. I doubt this would be hard to implement as a free service - how many resources could this honestly take?
Too bad. You're stuck with that silly username you came up with when you first bought your PS3 at 13.

I second the above posters suggestion of Sony doing what Steam does.

I smell bullshit, if Xbox Live let's you do it why can't PSN? They can't be that different Infrastructure wise.
