My PS3 takes a long time to download demos. I have never had a demo download that took less than two hour and most of the time it takes well over three hours to download a demo. I get high speed internet from Suddenlink Communications.

I just ran an internet connection test on my PS3 using speedtest.net and my download speed is 733kb/s

I also ran the same test on my laptop and the download speed is 7944 kb/s

Both my PS3 and laptop are using a wireless connection.

Why is it so slow on the PS3 and how can I make it faster?

Thanks

hm....wired is better than wireless in internet connections.......since you are using wireless in both ps3 and laptop your internet speed is splited in both of them, try using an ethernet cable from your ps3 to your modem directly, and with your laptop turned off

gamespot just posted a thing about SDD harddrive that is small and emits little heat, if you want to increase your download speed like that then i'd suggest purchasing that. but beware, its 400 bones..other than that, i dont know any other way.

How is that a problem? Wired is faster than wireless. It always has been. As for the TC, I never heard of Suddenlink Communications but you might want to check with them about your connection. I'm using SBC AT&T and one time I was having really slow connection or what seemed to be slower than the package I paid for. I called them and specifically asked them to test my connection. I did a self-test on my computer as well and it was reading something slower than what I paid for. Long story short. He fixed the problem and gave me one month free of internet. The important part was that my internet speed was optimized.

If it turns out, it's not your internet connection then it's your PS3 or PSN, or BOTH.. Good luck.

3 hours :O woah dude. Only takes me about 20 minutes..30 minutes max. Try downloading something with your laptop turned off and try and get a wired connection. Wireless just creates problems.

Elann2008

It used to be Cox Communications but Suddenlink bought them a couple of years ago(at least in Texas they did)

U should really go wired for your ps3's internet its a lot faster, i had my ps3 set up wireless for the first couple of months that i had it and demo downloads took 2 to 4 hours since i went wired they take 30min to and hour and a half max.

im juz sayin the wired works betta for PS# connectivity and downloading, but w/e works with yo config is ok
#22 Posted by Brainhunter (2201 posts) -

Wired works by default on par, or better than wireless. Wireless connections have too many factors that can throttle the speed, such as distance from the network source, objects that intrude (thick walls, metal obstacles), other waves that run in the air (cordless phones for example). All these diminish the wireless connection's maximum speed.

Wired completely wipes out those factors, and relies exclusively on your internet speed and the quality and length of the ethernet cables you use to a certain degree, with minimal impact on maximum speed.

Get better Internet connection. You will be able to download a 2GB demo in about one hour.

I downloaded a number of demo's today and for some reason they all downloaded incredibly fast. I downloaded around 4-5 gig in about 6 hours. Your laptop seems to have a MUCH faster speed.. is it closer to the wireless router than the PS3 is? You'll want a good signal strength. I checked mine and it was on 60%.

No my laptob was actually further away from the router than my PS3(only by like 10 ft). And my signal strength is always greater than 95%.

Less for me. PS store download speed is awesomely great when it's not rush hour (aka 10 minutes after the store update) I DLed Bad company demo in... 25 minutes more or less. So yeah, when people complain that it's slow it's either 2 things

1. Busy hour when a buttload of people try to DL the same thing at the same time.

2. Slow internet connection or bad wireless signal

Wired is better AND more reliable than wireless = FACT

10gig speeds possible through cable. Wireless is nowhere near that. And its even slower if you have encryption.

This happens to me too... I have a wireless connection and the PSN downloads are slow as hell, but the other online features are perfect (or as close as you get with a wireless connection)... I think the problem is with the PSN servers or something.

Never ever give advice again. How can you tell someone to drop $400 on premature technology that wouldn't help him much?

The correct answer to your situation is to have your PS3 wired. That or learn to be patient.

I have AT&T UVerse, with 18mg Service. My computer runs at the correct speed, but, my PS3 is saying its only getting 3mgps down and .733 up. It is plugged straight into the Residential Gateway(modem), and its still getting that slow of speed. My computer gets anywhere between 15-17.3 mgps speeds, wirelessly. Any help would be appreciated!

It is generally faster to have a wired connection. Make sure your internet connection is set up correctly for your console as well.

you just need a faster internet service provider, or change your internet plan.

i downloaded tiget woods PGA 10 1.7GB in 15mins.

btw make sure your wireless rounter is close to your ps3. mine is 5 meters from it.

I would say go for the wired connection My Ps3 downloads at 1Mb per second so if the demo is 1.3Gb's then it takes about 20 mins

Same here. I had mine wired for a while and noticed a difference. The PS3 is just a slow downloader. Even with a 20mps cable internet connection it takes its sweet butt time. I have read somewhere before about a way to use your PC as a server to take some of the work load off the PS3 and get it done faster, but I don't know how something like that would actually work. Maybe you should Google it. If not.... Go watch a movie.
#46 Posted by haydenlh (2 posts) -
I would start at the internet service provider (ISP), Mine takes a day to download a HD movie, I'm suppose to have 30 M dn 5 M up bandwidth through Time Warner Road Runner...let me just say don't ever waste your money on them, from the bottom to the top they are complete imbeciles. If you have time to preform an analysis of your internet connection--not just a speed test, you probably have intermittent connection, basically to fool most speed tests a cable company will give a burst at the beginning and drop the bottom out at the end...and thus comes the problem with streaming video or downloading large files...I suspect, netflix and psn network establish a connection speed by looking at the slowest rate or the min of the signal stream so that it is a steady uninterrupted connection...because the bottom drops out of the connection I would guess it establishes it at the slower rate--below 700 K which is required for steaming of most video streams. If you have a cable company internet connection or are tethering from a cell phone I would start there in troubleshooting.
#47 Posted by hiryu3 (7304 posts) -
downloads for me are fast. I have both of my PS3s wired and I downloaded ME3 demo, Syndicate, Twisted Metal and House of the Dead on both consoles in under 35 minutes. I have FIOS 25/25
#48 Posted by haydenlh (2 posts) -
It depends on the length of the wire and the type of medium it is made out of...fiber would max the signal with no distortion--25-30 mile hops and 300+ miles before echo removal is needed in the system...something like CAT V or VI would need to be under 100M and could have a slight distortion of a signal.--not enough to usually to cause a problem, coaxial has extra issues like matching impedance aka don't us 50 ohm cable (RF coax) on video equipment that is build for 75 ohm, CDIM add another part of the system to convert one signal type to another, etc.. Wireless jumps into a new group, do you have 802.11 b/g/n? Those different protocols can slow down your connection let alone interference from other devices that are using your frequency range and the overlap of bandwidth. On a 802.11 b or g you have 20 M bandwidth and up to 40 M bandwidth with n, so basically your focus should be on if you have b you are limited to 5.5 or 11 M bit rate, g goes up to 54 M bit rate and n goes to 150 M bit rate and has a quad MIMO (for n)... So if you have b, without question 99% of wired networks will be faster because even the slow Ethernet is 10M-100M and you are limited to 11M. Now back to the interference, if something is transmitted async and you have interference it might have to send that entire transmission again, if it is sync then you might have to send that entire packet again. So when an engineer tells you that wired is better than wireless realize we are pointing to variables, such as the interference and others, in which are removed in most cases by being wired. You could test multiple times and get a speed that is just as fast as the wired, but if you move your computer around thick concrete walls or especially metal beams you will have an attenuation of the signal in which decreases that available bandwidth--which will reduce your bit rate. So short answer is wired is better in most situations as it eliminates variables and can provide the full bandwidth available. Wireless is better if you want mobility and are willing to give up some of the bandwidth.

I had this problem. Not just with my PS3, but my Roku as well. If you don't mind tinkering with your router, there are a few things you can try. First, make sure there isn't any sort of interference from another nearby device. If your router supports it, make sure that UPnP is enabled. Or you could set up the PS3 with a static IP and forward the ports, or just put it in the DMZ if your router supports that. You could try using a different DNS such as OpenDNS or GoogleDNS. The trick that worked for me (and don't ask me why it worked, because it doesn't really make sense) was enabling MAC filtering on my router and putting the PS3 and Roku MAC adresses into it. For some reason after I did that it was like opening the floodgates. If you need help doing any of these things, a quick Google search will provide you with walktrhoughs. For reference, I have a 15Mb/ps internet connection and the PS3 was only ever getting sub 1Mb/ps speeds wirelessly.

Are you playing a game online when your downloading? If so then your downloads stop and go to pending. If your downloading something on your laptop or streaming videos same time as downloads. That could slow it down.
