Well since the ps3 is more like a computer than the ps2 was, is it safer to turn the ps3 off by the switch on the back or the button on the front?
im asking this because i realize that with computers you have to turn it off with the start button way instead of the button on the front to be safe.

Leave it on Stand by mode.( When a solid red light is there) To do that the safer way would be to turn off with the controler and just leave it, or you can hold the power button on the front. Thats how i do it and if you do this you can turn it on with the controller.

So while dealing with a problem with my first PS3, I had to talk to SONY and addressed this very problem.  They said: "NEVER TURN IT OFF BY THE BACK SWITCH WHEN THE SYSTEM IS ON, THIS CAN CAUSE DATA LOSS AND INTERNAL SYSTEM DAMAGE."

You can turn off the back switch in standby mode if you want to.  If your system freezes, they suggest you hold the front button for 10 sec, which will cause a "soft reset".  After talking to them, I looked through the manual more closely, and the warning about the back power button is in the manual as well.

To answer the original poster, just hold down the PS button on your controller and select "turn off the system" in the menu that comes up. The only time you should turn off the switch on the back is when disconnecting the system to move it someplace else.

Aero- if you can find them get a set of the PS2 component cables. They use the same multi-out port on both the PS2 and PS3 and would likely be less expensive than cables marked as being for the PS3. Should be able to find them just about anyplace selling games.

^^ like they said.. I always use the ps button on the controller.  If I know it's going to be off for a long time, then I might turn it off using the switch in the back.

You can get them at gamestop, ebgames, funcoland, walmart, and plenty of other places. Also you could use the ps2 component cables for the ps3 but they are of less quality

ok thats what i'll do, what would frustrate me is if i will actually see problems and then id have to go back and buy cables, damn that would suck since i already need to buy a optical cable for sound.
