Can static damage only one button on a controller?

The circle button on my Ps3 controller stopped working recently. The only thing I can remember that preceded this happening was a static electricity shock I got before I picked it up which made me drop it on a carpeted floor a distance of about one foot. I can't imagine that drop on a carpeted floor would have harmed it so the only other theory I have is the static shock... But only one button damaged.

does your controller has warranty ? if still within the warranty ,go to take free repair by them
