Yes, the PS3 would make a great gift at anytime! I actually plan on buying a additional one(I got a fat and a slim) to put in my spare room. I also have a PS4, but I'm getting the extra PS3 mainly for the additional media features that the PS4 lacks.

There's still a good number of support for this system even if the PS4's out, which is why I can't wait to get a PS3 this holiday season!

Buy a PS3 for all the games that are already out, not the ones that will be coming to it in the future. Unless you only play sports games and Call of Duty, I guess. But even then, I can't see there being PS3 versions of those games for that much longer.

Thanks guys, I think I'll be getting an extra ps3 console this holiday season...but do you think that we'll get at least another WWE game after WWE 2k15 and another Call of Duty after Advanced Warfare?

Yes it would, there's a massive library for it, so why not.

Sure a videogame console makes a great gift. The Playstation 3 will be supported by Sony to at least 2016, Sony promised a 10 year lifespan for the PS3 way back in 2006. The PS1 lasted 1994-2006, The PS2 lasted 2000-2012 The PSP lasted 2004-2014 Sony is known for it's long lasting and supported game consoles. So the PS3 is good for a few years yet. Plus there is a ton of games for the PS3 so your dad can catch up on games that he may have missed.

Since your family is really into gaming a console Retro or current is a great gift. While you are not able to give your Dad a PS4. A PS3 will be a fine gift for your father.

All of Sony's consoles except for the PSvita 2011- 2014? and The PS3 2006-20?? have had a 10 year lifespan. Sony did promise on 10years for the PS3 and will make good on that. PSvita seems to be "iffy" at this point.

You Dad will be happy with a PS3 as a gift. As a true game will like a current or Retro console. Plus it is the thought that counts. Your Dad will be happy with a PS3 as a gift from his son.

One thing to be careful of is the last gen versions of games missing some features or modes of the newer current gen versions. For example, you mentioned wwe 2k 25. The ps4 version has a pretty cool looking career mode for created characters where you go from rookie to champion. The ps3 version however does not have this mode.

The same is true for other games including fifa. If you're not too bothered by these exclusions then cool. But just something to be mindful of.

It's a horrible idea

If money is an issue wait until a sale or a price drop on the PS4.

Your plan is to buy old outdated tech that close to no one supports. If you just wait a bit for the PS4 you'll have tech that will be supported for at least the next half decade from your purchase, if not longer.

Do what you want.... I personally wouldn't, but that's me. If all he plays is Sports / CoD.... then the difference investment wise is only $100 - $150... and if you're gamers, you'll be upgrading to a PS4 sometime in the future anyway.... so why bother with the inferior machine now.

Basically spend a little more now to save more money in the long run.
