If anyone is knowledgable, I have a GRAND WEGA, I just bought in December, I am currently playing on 720p, my LCD doesn't support 1080p, since 720p is progressive is it better than my maximum resolution of 1080i? I was just curious which looked better, I have played it on 1080i, but the 720p maybe it's just my head, looks a bit nicer.

Thanks!

for fast-paced movement in games and movies, 720p is smoother. But 1080i gives a better picture. like if you were going to view pictures, you would want 1080i.

yeah faster paced games progressive is better, overall progressive is better but how big is the tv? 1080i would look better on a tv over 40 inches.

Alright, thanks for your input, I guess I'll just switch between these two resolutions.

I'd stick to 1080i the picture will look sharper and you will notice it on a tv that big.

1080i is interlaced, which means the picture is being put together in two different fields (odd and even) and is a little slower. progressive scan is much better, but a 1080 progressive scan delivers better picture than 720p while keeping the quality much better. waiting for 1080p games...

Actually, it's best if you use the native resolution of your TV.  You want to minimize as much alteration to the signal as possible.   For instance, your TV's native resolution is 720p.   If you set your PS3 to output in 1080i your TV will have to deinterlace and downscale the 1080i signal to display on the 720p native display.  However, if you are outputting in 720p then no alteration is required.

An LCD screen is progressive by nature. If it isn't 1080p, than it is probably 720p or that funky 768p. So, you should send a 720p signal to it. If you sent 1080i to it, the HDTV has to both de-interlace and downscale the image before display. If you send a 720p signal, it just displays it. Then again, the PS3 doesn't have scaling abilities. So, just tell your PS3 you have both 720p and 1080i. That way you can play games rendered in both 720 and 1080. This is how my PS3 is setup for my 720p HDTV.

How many times do we go over this ?

But anyways, 720P = 1440i whereas 1080i = only 540P.....

Do the math, :wink:

Ok, I'm sort of having the same dilemma but instead of games it's for movies. My LCD TV's native resolution is 1366 x 768 (whatever that is.) I would like to know if I should play my blu-ray movies in 1080i or 720p. I play my games in 720p thought for Blu-Ray movies (which I don't own yet) what resolution should I display it in?

the PS3 will only output blu-ray movies at 1080i or 1080p. So you are going to have to let your TV do the work if you want it to be 720p.

The reason 1080i looks sharper on most HDTVs is because it's filling more of the pixels on your display. 720p = 1280x720 pixels most HDTV are if not all 720 HDTV have 1366x768 which means your losing rough 4000+ pixels when using 720p. Where as 1080i will come closer your full native resolution of 1049088 pixels. Regardless of the interlaced dither 1080i will come closer to filling every pixel on your display. 1080i is the way to go.

720p, displays 720 scan lines fully 60 times a second. The other, imaginary 1440i, would display 1440 scan lines fully 30 times a second, or 60 half frames a second. The scanning frequency to do either of those types of image would be the same.

Yo Einstein The human eye clocks out at roughly 30 fps in terms of relative motion. Thats why films are shot at 24fps and video shot at 29.97fps. 720 lines at 60 hertz is different from 720 interlaced at 30 hertz. 1440i is 720lines interlaced at 30 hertz and requires a Qresolution display to be appreciated. 1080i is 540 lines interlaced at 30 hertz although it never fills every pixel on screen simultaneously the human eye cannot tell the difference. If you could view motion at 60 hertz then you'd be able to see in slow motion. 720p is not 1440i PERIOD

From EzineArticles.com;

"To answer the question, it's important to understand the difference between 720p vs 1080i. A 720p signal is made up of 720 horizontal lines. Each frame is displayed in its entirety on-screen for 1/30th of a second. This is know as progressive scan (hence the 'p')The quality is like watching 30 photographic images a second on TV. A 1080i signal comprises 1080 horizontal lines but all the lines are not displayed on-screen simultaneously. Instead, they are interlaced (hence the 'i'), ie every other lines is displayed for 1/60th of a second and then the alternate lines are displayed for 1/60th of a second. So, the frame rate is still 30 frames per second, but each frame is split into two fields, which your brain then puts together subconsciously.

Most of the time interlacing works fine, but for fast moving images, such as sports like baseball and hockey it can cause problems which manifest themselves as a 'stepping' effect on-screen. Progressive scan signals don't have this problem and so are better suited to sports."
