I think all the games are the normal dvd-r.  Don't think theres any in +R, but theoretically it would be possible if you use a mod chip, just that we're not gonna talk about that.  Anyways, its still DVDs.

The vast majority of PS2 games are on single-layer DVD-5 discs, the 4.7GB DVD-ROM format. There are over 150 PS2 games which are just on CD-ROM format though, either in all releases or in certain regions. And there are around 20 or so PS2 titles now which have been released on DVD-9 discs, the 8.5GB dual-layer format.

It shouldn't be, except that a PS2's inability to read either CD-ROM games or DVD-9 games can be one of the first symptoms of a dirty lens or more serious laser problems. Frequently, those are the first formats to show disc read errors, when things start going wrong.

That can make it useful to know which games are which types, either for troubleshooting games you already have, or to avoid getting games that you know your machine may not be able to handle. The piracy aspect had not occurred to me, and if that is the reason for the original post, I'm sorry I even bothered to reply. :x

i'm not going to defend myself or argue with anyone aside from in this message, so believe me or not i dont really care but im not pirating ps2 games and i dont plan to.

I'm a musician and i'm against all that stuff - pirating movies, file sharing, copying materials, etc.

i was just curious to know what format they were in.  i'm just starting to learn about how to record dvd's from vhs tapes, and from tv programming, i'm quite a long ways away from pirating games... assuming i can get the thing to even work with copywritten material.  so just relax

Well, Sony was one of the big backers for the DVD+ format. However, I think that they only use DVD-ROM for PS2 DVD games, and CD-ROM for those on CD. Some games like Gran Turismo 4 would come on a dual-layer disc though.
