If you have played Dark Cloud 2 and enjoyed it Rogue Galaxy is a no brainer, its a fairly good game with lots to do. Valkyrie Profile is the sequel to a legend, and its a damn solid game in its own right. If you are looking for traditional fun, go Rogue Galaxy. Quirky battke system with a healthy dose of mythology, go Valkyrie Profile.
Rogue Galaxy is good for a once through but its not worth owning!!! VP2 is worth owning. If your asking about rogue galaxy i have to ask if you have played or owned Dark Cloud 2? DC2 is made by level 5 also and it is infintely better than rogue galaxy. DC2 is a must own game and easily crushes rg and vp2.

In its own right Rogue Galaxy is a good game, compared with its predecessor it drops down a little. I had some serious misgivings about certain balance issues in RG (potion use) and other characterization things.
Rogue Galaxy! It has better exploration (you can step on almost everywhere and rotate the camera) and battle system. VP is semi side scrolling (like Radiata Stories).
Go for VP2. It has beautiful scenarios and characters, same as the stunning story. Rogue Galaxy seems more convetional in that aspects. I found a lot more innovative and challenging the battles in VP2 than in RG. I still love to fight in that game.
Valkyrie Profile II.It have a lot of characters,one of the most beautiful graphics on Play Station 2,great sound and voice acting,execelent storyline and it is hard.The last boss battle are great and the last dungeon are cool.

Well, that's probably why our opinions differ then. I just found Dark Cloud 2 a few months ago and haven't played it yet. My opinion my change.
