i would say no.. the first one's story is so amazing that you won't want to skip it. i think you should playthe first one before going on to the 2nd. unless you are just in it for the action.
There's not much to understand really. The way I see it, GoW2 can be taken as a whole different story... but the point here is that it'll totally spoil GoW1 (unless you already know the srtoy)
You should play God Of war1. It's a true classic, and the story can't be missed. 20 dollars man, believe me it is worth it. Then play The second. I'm sure you will enjoy it a lot more.
To follow the story, play the first one and then play the second one...but if you're like me and basically you don't give a damn about it (in my opinion, theplot of GOW is a simple case of bad customer experience),play the second game.
Another plus...after playing the first GOW, playing GOW2 will be a hundred times easier. They're basically the same, but GOW2 is a longer, more in depth action/adventure game than the previous one.
