Well, check out the Dragonball Z games. Then try Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs. Capcom or SNK vs. Capcom and more. Smash Bros on the Nintendo consoles were the best ever for times when you have a lot of friends over.
It's hit and miss for online servers, for example SOCOM is still rocking, whereas all the Winning Eleven soccer (football) games seem to be defunct.
As far as two controllers go though, any fighter game is awsome, both the Lego Star Wars games are hillarious two player. Of course Timesplitters is amazing co-op or deathmatch. Let's see.. gran turismo is always great head to head, but so is the burnout series. Surprisingly hillarious, especially if you have two racing wheels.
