It's never too late to buy a ps2 (well unless the cease production...). You should definitely pick one up. There are a lot of great games, new and old. You'll never run out of games to play. :)
If you are really concerned about price you can go for the older model of the PS2 as that is a bit cheaper than the slimline PS2 i have seen a new slimline PS2 for £80 and an older model for about £60
It's not too late at all. The PS2 is a great system, and depending on what kind of games you are interested in, you'll be able to play the previous games in a series before you buy a PS3 and play the continuations that can only be released on the PS3, since the PS2 is heading near that time. That's just a thought. But I agree that the PS3 is pricey (who doesn't), and a lot of people have been very disappointed with it anyways (something about it screwing up or whatever, I don't fully understand). By now the PS2 and its games are much cheaper, so I think it's a good idea. But the choice is yours: jump into the action now, or save for a PS3.
I am going to get a ps3 soon, but in the last weeks I have bought a lot of cheap ps2 games, and there are more I have to play before I get the ps3. With the huge amount of good games and the prices on games and equipment i don't think you can go wrong with buying a ps2 8)
I'm going to throw in my agreement too. I made this decision last year but I still don't think its too late. I wanted to get the kids a gamming system and I did all the math andchose PS2. Xbox 360 big hdd extra controller 2 kids each pick one game at least $600 dollars
We got....... PS2 extra controller each their own memory card for saves let them each pick 10 games all for 100+ bucks less.
When you get down to it 20 games is way better then 2 no matter how great the 2 might be.
