No sometimes it's actually better than a DVD player on some occasions.

Personally, my PS2 has worked out perfectly as the family DVD player - It plays everything. Of course, I have a Slimline PSTwo, and I've noticed that the older (large) PS2's seem to have issues with DVD's that aren't of the right regional coding. What kind of PS2 do you have (Large or Slimline)?

You got that right.

I've got a few burned DVDs and they won't play in my Sony dvd player - they skip frequently.  Same goes for this other DVD player, of the cheap variety (like a Symphonic or something).  But my PS2 plays them with no issues at all.  Older PS2, btw, had it for like 4+ years.

I have a home theater so there is no reason for me to use it as a DVD player.

The only problem I have is that the DVD wont skip to the second layer of a DVD. It just freezes the movie. My PS2 gives better imagequality than my DVD-player, but thats mainly cause I have a better cable for my PS2.

If it won't play DVDs or PS1 games turn it upside down, I'm pretty sure that it's just a a slight difference (like a gram)  in the weight of the discs which causes the disc to drop back into the tray when it is suppesed to be lifted out and spinning. Anyway turning it upside down works for me.
