Why are they so underrated? Most anime games (except DBZ Budokai 3 and Pokemon handheld versions) have terrible scores. Why?
Anime games pretty much always suck.
Other than Melty Blood, which technically is based on a visual novel that was only later adapted into an anime (Tsukihime,) there are no exceptions that I've played. Higurashi Daybreak (PC only) is passably decent, but again that's based on a visual novel that was only later adapted into an anime.
Why you ask? Because most of the anime games are just cheap cash-ins aimed at diehard fans. No thought is actually put into developing the gameplay and mechanics. Why are they so underrated? Most anime games (except DBZ Budokai 3 and Pokemon handheld versions) have terrible scores. Why?

The problem is that GS's taste isn't the same as everyone else's and that's a fact. The reason why the rate the DBZ and Pokemon games and any anime games is because they tend to get repetitive, nothing new really shows up in sequels and well, it's GS.SPD_WeBmAsTaHThat's an interesting point. I see the perspective mentioned earlier in the thread that a lot of the games are for the fans, and not much more than that. But maybe the games would get a higher score, if there weren't the sheer volume of them that there are.
In the case of Pokémon games, your standards are probably too high. None of them scored above a 9, but that doesn't mean they're bad games.
Also, they're not based on an anime. The anime was based on the games.

Totally agree
Anime fans will buy the games no matter how good or bad, so why spend the money to make it good?SmashBrosLegendNot always the case. I have yet to buy any anime games other than Pokemon.:P
Most anime games were not great as anime shows. PS1's Dragonball GT Final Bout had not great gameplay as PS1's Dragonball Z Legends. Some companies might rush to develop anime games as not great as anime and manga.DeafNYCPlayeri know but there is one anime game that is good and that's Naruto.
More than one anime game were good games. I liked PS1's Ghost in the Shell, SNES's Ranma 1/2 Super Battle, SNES's Bishoujo Sensei Sailor Moon Another Story, GCN's Naruto Clash of Ninja 1-4 (GNT 3-4), and others.
