Well really, they are two totally different things. Yes, Steam tracks hours of your Steam games played, but that's about it. Xfire tracks a lot more games, let's you add friends to people playing games that AREN'T Steam games, and a whole lot more (video capture for one).
But Steam is a digital distribution system for games, whereas xfire is basically an instant messenger for gamers.
I don't use xfire anymore as it was rather pointless for me. None of my friends used it, and I didn't really have any interest in playing with strangers. It's screen and video capture though are pretty good for being a free program.
I use both. Steam is great for digital distribution and such while Xfire keeps count of my playtime and it's a great tool for screenshots.UpInFlamesAnd videos!I prefer Xfire cause of that but still use Steam all day.

I used X-fire for a long time, till I started using steam then x-fire just started to become dead weight,
I really don't have any uses for it anymore that Steam cant do. the Video recorder is nice but I bought Fraps back in June/ or July I think. So X-fire just became useless for me sadly.
I use both. Steam is great for digital distribution and such while Xfire keeps count of my playtime and it's a great tool for screenshots.UpInFlamesThat's what I find. I also find xfire more useful because I play a lot of non-steam games and so I can still chat to my mates.
I use and like both of them. Xfire tends to be more practical for me because not all my friends play Valve games. CommanderShiroYou can use Steam with non-valve games.
I love Xfire and I use his features 99% of my PC time. I like his personal stats tracking, the voice IP and chat support and gaming launchig, but above any other feature I like that is not mandatory and/or intrusive, and any time a player wants to join to your friend list the admission is subject to your approve. I have Seam because I have HL-2 and DoW II, but I don't use it and don't buy games linked to Steam anymore.
You really can't compare them,
Steam is hardcore into delivering a content-delivery service
Xfire is hardcore into keeping gameplay hours, screenshots and videos.
I use them both equally.
