Yea your PSU is very restricting. Providing you upgrade, i think a maybe a GTX 260 would be a good complement to your rig.

It can handle it, but it's a bit risky. Get the 8600, save some money and then upgrade your PSU

Do you have any specifics or a model of you PSU? I doubt a generic 300w will run a 8600gt and may even damage it, however a decent 300w PSU with those systems specs should be fine.

Just get a decent PSU, such as a good make 500W PSU from a brand such as OCZ, Antec or Corsair, The you will be able to get a good graphics card, trust me its worth it and you will be happy in the end. However with your CPU, i wouldnt get anything higher than a GTX260 or HD4870.

First thing's first- I would go so far as to say that you HAVE to get a new PSU. I wouldn't be shocked if your 300 watt was actually responsible for killing that 7900GS. An underpowered graphics card is much more prone to failure. That being said.. you should get a good 500-550 watt PSU (Corsair, Antec, Cooler Master), and nothing faster than a 9800GTX+ or GTS 250. Maybe an ATI 4670 or 4850. Your CPU will bottleneck anything faster quite severely. I speak from experience! I had my 8800 GTS 512 (which overclocked is the same as a 9800GTX or GTS 250) in a system with a 2.6ghz Athlon 64 X2, and I didn't even realize how bottlenecked it was until I got my E8400.

Save yourself the time, get a 750W power supply :D

You'll be set as far as PSU's go for a long time.
