If you mean standard "level up" and skills based RPG's then I have to stick with Dark Sun part 1.  If you mean non linear, story arc type RPG's then Star Control 2.  If I have to pick between them, then it's SC2 all the way.

1. Baldur's Gate Series

2. The original 8-Bit Final Fantasy

3. Final Fantasy III (Kefka's my favorite villain of all time)

4.  KOTOR Series

5. Neverwinter Nights

Haven't played Oblivion yet, or I imagine it'd be on here.

Of what I've played.

1) Oblivion. Behind the sweet audiovisual presentation lies a super streamlined, deep open-ended action RPG that just works really well. Plus it's really, really big.

2) Fallout 2.Awesome post-apocalyptic setting, nice amounts of depth and excellent gameplay mechanics.

3) Knights of the old Republic II. Memorable characters, a great plot and a sweet combat system.

4) Morrowind. Looking away from it's shoddy combat system and occasional hokey-ness, the sheer depth of the setting of this game is amazing, as was the great plotline.

5) Neverwinter Nights. It played really well and the DnD system and setting worked like a charm.

Came out years and years ago and up until recently (recently superseded by Guild Wars), it was the game i played most of the time.

I have played many great RPGs, and they have been the best games I have ever played. But I can't say which was better. How can I compare Arcanum and Chrono Trigger? Oblivion and Final Fantasy X? Fallout and Morrowind?
I can only say: RPG games are virtual worlds which let you explore new environs and live amazing stories -new lives, in fact- without leaving your safe room and losing the people you love and care about, and that is the important thing: they let you be yourself in another world. So the best RPG is the RPG which made you feel you are a part of it, and it is different for everybody. For me, it was Arcanum.

Deus ex? i love it but am not gonna cal it an rpg.

1)fallout 2 (i didnt find the first that good and brotherhood of steel sucked)

2)oblivion 3the witcher

4)fallout 3

5)kotor never got into baldur gates or diablo, nevewinter nights is great just not on my top5.

Didnt like vampire bloodlines...too much about choices and small maps, plus combat with guns was freaking terrible.

For some reason i couldnt get into morrowind

gothic series are lowbudget buggy crap

Fable and mass affect dont have rpg system therefore i dont find them amazing... Ohh wait they got choices... yeah but they dont really change much. (meh just consolized crap for xbox users just like bioshock was compared to System shock 2 and deus ex invisible war compared to deus ex.

Not in any particular order:

Oblivion

Mass Effect

The Witcher EE Director's Cut

Gothic 3

Drakensang

And if you want to count JRPGs, then add FF VIII, FF X, and FF X-2.

My top 5 in order.

  1. Planescape: Torment
  2. Fallout 1 & 2
  3. Ultima VII: The Black Gate (PC version)
  4. Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn
  5. Divine Divinity (yes, it really is an amazing rpg!)

Honorable mentions to Dungeon Master, Betrayal at Krondor, Gothic, and Arcanum.
Lilac_Benjie

Yep, I second Divine Divinity, it really is a shame that not many people know about this game. They are making a sequel that's coming out this year, hopefully it's as good as the original.
