@epleh13: overkill is term used on everything, when you bring something too powerful for a certain situations.

Example: someone bought a 16Gb RAM, i7 and GTX1080 to play Terraria, a game that requires only 200$ machine which has low graphics requirements.

An overkill is also a term used when you do too much damage to a monster (RPG games) when it only required small amount of damage to kill it.

Does it harm to do an overkill? No, but you might have used something less powerful to achieve the same goal.

@PredatorRules: Oh now I imagine, overkill is situation where I play low game with a high spec system like that, right? Glad to hear if it does not have a bad effect to the hardwares. Thank a lot.

overkill is a general term meaning that you've brought too much to solve a problem, to get through a situation, etc.

You brought a tank to crush an aluminum can when your foot would suffice. A flamethrower to burn a piece of paper when a match would do.

...and a 3-way SLI GPU setup with an i7 Collector's Edition 1500-dollar CPU 32GB memory and a 500 dollar translucent case to run...I don't know...Hyper Light Drifter? Minecraft? Terraria?

I will be though getting at least a 1440p monitor soon it just looking for right one. I just wanted to start fresh on a new PC and thought sod it that's all I do I might as well buy it now and not upgrade later. Should last me 4 years at least.

A GTX 1080 or Titan XP would be overkill, unless you only play AAA demanding games in 4k with all the settings cranked up.

I depends on what you want to do. An i7-6850k would certainly be overkill for gaming, but if you do a lot of content creation or steaming as well, it may not be.

Agreed. I hate it when people describe high end gpu's as overkill... Will it be "overkill" in 3 years time?

You can cap your fps with V-sync.

It won't use more power or heat.

The CPU and GPU will only use the power it needs to. With heavier gaming (or heavier applications) there will be more power and heat.

@FelipeInside: I personally think that higher FPS on gaming result for more heat where I merely need 60 to enjoy it.

Yes, higher FPS on gaming results in more heat but you don't need a limiter for lower load games.

@PredatorRules: thanks for clarifying that. I think that's something that people whom mother tongue is not English. Also to people who are not used to talk using gaming jargon.
