Team Fortress 2 (free to play) Quake Live Counter Strike Tribes: Ascend (I think you can run it on low at least, its free anyways so give it a try) Those are some pretty good ones off the top of my head.
Also Call of Duty 4, its got a bunch of nice mods and a decent community
Bother Counter Strike and Counter Strike: Source have a lot of dedicated players, so you shouldn't have trouble with either one (though CSS is newer and has a larger community from what I can tell).

BF2 community is not dead, I just played it last night.
Well that depends on what you mean by "dead". The community is pretty sparse right now, though you can still find games.
