Am I the only one who feels that people take the so called "messages" in video games way too seriously?

I do know for a fact that she has a history of being the whole "damsel in distress". She has a history of locking down the comments and ratings on her videos (as to avoid criticism) but kept it open on the one video that was generating the most hate. She then went on a small campaign basically promoting the amount of hate she got just to fund her kickstarter. It was hilariously ironic as she was fulfilling the exact stereotypes that she is speaking out against.

After that whole debacle I just shrug her vidoes off and not care. Bringing up the subject of feminism and video games is one that our industry is going through as it matures, but I think somebody else who could take a much more objective look at the whole situation would fair much better and would actually be worth my time.

Games are already a form of media that is mature. How is the Dead Island "gore porn" anyway? How is it any different than what actually goes on in game, or in any other similarly violent game? How is it different than hundreds or thousands of violent movies that had provocative mixture of violence and the female body/sex/etc?

The outrage over that statuette is silly, to put it politely.

I referring the bust that Baranga was talking about, which as he pointed out - is a nod to exploitation films that dive into gore porn - and the reason there was so much uproar. Dead Island itself (the game) is just tacky and dumb in many, many ways all round, and should be a bit more b-movie bad in the right ways imho considering it's a game about hitting zombies, but I wouldn't ever disagree that it's just as tasteless / bad as many films out there.

Sure. But you can say the same about all manner of commentary involving media.

I know exactly which statue you are referring to (sorry my original statement wasn't clear)...and It's no different than any other horror related art, especially B-movies from the 80's. Gore porn is such a hyperbolic term to use in regards to the statue. It's a bloody torso in a bikini, and frankly matches the source material (ie the game itself) just fine. It's not even nude.

The game itself I found fun, but that's neither here nor there. I think the reality is it is just like a fun B-movie horror flick, or other very violent movie. It's for fun...yet people get all up in arms over the statuette...it's contradictory and ignorant.

The roar from the limp wrist brigade wasn't that it was in bad taste (hey, that's certianly debateable!)...it was that it was flatout mysogynistic and the people who made it were sexists!  Meanwhile, the statue was created by a woman lol!

Honestly I think something that tacky and low brow doesn't deserve skimping around referring to it as 'horror related art', when well it is trashy gore porn - which is ok in that it is absolutely trashy and so low brow; trashiness has its place. If you think it's fine and whatnot that's cool, personally I think it's about crass and tasteless as anything can get but I'm no arbiter on the subject matter and I'll be the last to go about saying 'ban this sick filth'. People got up in arms about the statue for what it is; T&A by the way of a mutilated human corpse. If it was zombie sculpture with some T&A or a buxom bikini clad lady wielding a machete I highly doubt it would've been nearly the same uproar; and yeah I can see the whole outcry of misogyny as being pretty overblown as well; not to say that it didn't deserve criticism. Same with the whole 'a lady came up with the idea guys' point that popped up with this, Tomb Raider's dev team having Rihanna Pratchett onboard and the GoW achievement thing; it doesn't really nullify the criticism at all; but there's a point to be had there as part of the discussion.

In what way is it porn? It's not even nude. Also, I'm only "fine" with it as in I do not see it any different than what goes in any other form of accepted media (horror flick, other video games etc). I personally don't want one or anything, I don't buy collectors editions though so it's just not something I am interested in.

It didn't deserve any criticism of misogyny...I think people who cry misogyny need to actually read the definition of the term. There's shirtless mutilated zombie men in Dead Island as well. Does that mean there some reverse sexism/misogyny going on as well? No, it doesn't. Once again the limp wrist brigade was out in force getting outraged and claiming sexism where none existed.

Is it tasteless?  Crass?  Low brow?  Maybe...I think those are debatable points.

I think you missed my points? Gore porn in that it's obviously T&A mixed with well, gore, which as I said, tastelessness has its place. I stated my point about accusations of misogyny and generally agreed with yours; but noted that that didn't mean the *object, that being the bust* itself didn't deserve criticism. The object itself can be interpreted as sexist; (and I say again, that's not to say that crass doesn't have a place - that's my belief), but it was the reason why there was such widespread outcry from all manner of people.

First video wasn't anything new or interesting. Maybe it will get better. As it is now I've already seen other people write or talk about the roles of women in gaming better than this.

[QUOTE="MythPro1"][QUOTE="supertrooper23"]so she really got 250k? and that video is all she has to show for it so far? lol....lostrib

She only asked for $6,000.

but she got 150K

That's not her problem. Kickstarter is to fund projects that people want to do. From what she said on her Kickstarter $6,000 was what was needed (from what we have seen so far, far less then that was needed especially when she already takes time to blog about the subject). In this Kickstarters case there wasn't even any preorder or big bonuses for the backers so what people should have done was donate enough to fund it and then once it reached an amount that made sense people should have stopped (unless they did just want to give her money for doing it).

If I have an idea for something I want to do and I think it should cost $8,000 and I ask for $10,000 to do it just in case something goes wrong, and I go to try to get someone to finance the product that is what I expect to get. I don't expect some idiot to give me 20 times what I want and then to have them expect me to pull the content and production values that something like that would pay for out of my ass. If she was working on something like a movie or a video game and had staff members, locations, a film crew, etc then obviously more money could have been helpful but there is not a whole lot she could have done to improve a little web show, especially if she doesn't have the knowledge or experience to use the money effectively and if she tried to it would likely have just caused problems.

Many games developers and critics, writers, academics, and hell gamers at the moment - actively want to legitimise games as a form of media that is actually mature. Hence why there's so much backlash against the tacky gore-porn that is the Dead Island statue, or the GoW Ascension achievement, whilst there wasn't any in the past; we've seen this with all kinds of other media, your Two Penny Terribles, and pulp fiction, the exploitation era of film and so on. skrat_01

This is where that C. S. Lewis quote comes in handy:

Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

I should've posted inb4CSLewis, but yeah I'll always agree with that sentiment, but hey as I said, it's an industry trying to legitimise itself.
