Which do you think is a better RTS? Which is worth playing more?
#2 Posted by superkoolstud (2800 posts) -
Warhammer 40k because it is not only awesome, it is original unlike Starcraft.
#3 Posted by zer0sil3nce (237 posts) -
what? starcraft 1? and how can starcraft be unoriginal? it was basicly the first sci-fi rts ever made..... and starcraft i think wins.
#4 Posted by reecey_boy94 (28 posts) -

Oh, God I can't choose between the two

They both have the blue marines and mutant red creatures. In fact they have many similarities. I would have to choose SC2 because it is newer (and possibly will use Direct X 10 Graphics) and well..........it's Blizzard were comparing to people, BLIZZARD!!

Because Blizzard Ripped off Games Workshop. Much like the Nintendo/Sony CD fiasco, In the early 90s Blizzard was commisioned to make a RTS games based off Wahammer and Warhammer 40k. Games Workshop pulled out and Blizzard released the games anyway and was sued for Copyright infringment.

Both rocks!!!
#8 Posted by reecey_boy94 (28 posts) -

There is obviously a significant relation between the Starcraft and Warhammer because the marines are the same Blue power suits and the Zergs (or Tyrannids) are the red mutant fellows that mass produce and make an attack! I think Blizzard got a small amount of insparation form Warhammer 40k but the plots are completely different.

Still, Starcraft Rules

I'd go with Warhammer 40K any day.

Starcraft is and always will be a classic, but honestly, if you want a new a game, WH40K is the way to go. Awesome graphics and sound, huge number of races, it's just a blast to play.

However, when Starcraft 2 comes out, that will change :D

#11 Posted by Terrorantula (934 posts) -
In terms of story and art then Warhammer 40k but i havn't played a Warhammer game i've liked so far :P However i havn't played a Blizzard game i liked so far too lol.

i far prefer dawn of war - both for the setting (i love 40k) and for gameplay reasons

i love the territory-based resource points, the infantry squad system (including reinforcing, awesome idea) and the way most units have ranged and melee attacks

that said, i love the really easy-to-use starcraft campaign editor - i spent countless hours making cool missions for myself and friends, something that requires specialist skills with dawn of war, and most other games besides

plus, zerg are awesome

i think dow is the best rts ever made, but starcraft is a really great game too - i'd say i'm 70/30 in favour of dow

starcraft 2 will be awesome i'm sure, and i can't wait to play around with zerg swarms and the new campaign editor

if dow 2 (not confirmed as yet, but surely coming) has 'nids and an easy to use campaign editor, i'd pitch it as the new best rts ever, but if not - i'll very possibly find myself playing starcraft 2 instead of dow2 when the time comes

as settings, warhammer 40k poops on starcraft, but the thing with warhammer 40k is that it's been so developed over the years, and so much as been added, changed or even removed entirely, that there's a kind of choose your own version feel for people who've lived with 40k for so long... starcraft probably has a bit of an edge in that regard, being underdeveloped is sometimes a good thing

mmm... WARHAMMER 40000

blizzard was going to make a warhammer game and a warhammer 40k game, but gw chickened out before the launch. blizzard just removed any resemblance to the lisence and released them anyway. bllizzard is way overrated anyway. relic did a way better job. Thats why warcraft even has orks in the game. and the wood elves. the terrans were going to be sm, the protos eldar. and the zerg tyranids or orks.

Actually, your wrong about blue colored suits. That may be the case in the Ultramarines, but typically the Space Wolves wear gray, Blood Angels red, Dark Angels a dark green, White Scars (you guess!), and there are numerous other Astartes Chapters. Shoot, the old Luna Wolves (before they became the Sons of Horus) had white suits, Thousand Sons were primarily a dark blue, and the Soul Drinkers wear purple power armor. So, there is a difference. hehe.

Still, in the end I would have to go with Warhammer 40k as the story is well complimented by the Black Library novels and is easier to get into then Starcraft.

Edited: I can't type.

War-hammer 40K wins this bout, Star-craft just doesn't stand up to the whole of WH40k (setting, stories, Races, etc.). Starcraft is a classic, but like all Blizzard games, it is overrated and overhyped.
#17 Posted by Roma_Victis (2899 posts) -

TC, you are saying wh40k, then i will add fluff, and everything 40k have. the same with starcraft.

according to both fluff info, wh40k destroy the starcraft universe with a single task force, i can imagine the imperial guard killing protoss, zergs and terran even the 3 of them against the IG, the imperial navy would deal easily with the space ships, and the psykers would kill in any moment even the strongest templar.

it would be fun to see the swarms of zerg going against the tyranids, not even kerrigan would survive that.

in RTS, i go for DoW, but its not fair to compare SC vs DoW, starcraft is old wait for SC2 and DoW2 and then you should had a equal disscusion.

starcraft was a cool game, but now SC2 looks too much asiatic with that bright colors, why the koreans had to messed up

Its nearly impossible to compare a huge universe to Starcraft.. Warhammer 40k has so many numerous plots its not even funny.. Even one plot in the actual game was done by a single chapter which there dozens if not hundreds in human race alone..

in dow it was just the blood ravens 3rd company, 100 marines. and theres something like 100 space marine chapters, each with approx 1000 marines.

I like Starcraft's story in general better than I like the 40k stuff but that might just be because I've played the tabletop version for 10 or so years. Still they both have their merits.

From a scale standpoint, Starcraft is ambigious but can be seen as easily the smaller of the two. What it lacks in size, however, it makes up for in memorable characters and superb voice acting. The gameplay isn't my exact cup of tea but I don't dislike it by any means.

Dawn of War is a little irksome to me because it's story is rather generic for a Warhammer 40,000 story; at least to someone with my long history with the universe. Still, it raises certain interesting questions about the Blood Ravens and definitely has good game play.

As far as company loyalty goes, I don't vouch for either having loved games on both sides.

So in the end, Starcraft edges out slightly with story, Dawn of War with gameplay and more or less end up in a scrappy no holds barred deadlock in terms of my fondness for both.

Edit: Fixed Grammar

Command and Conquer and Dune 2 both beat SC by several years.

Once again... with feeling... 40K wins. No contest.

I enjoyed it. I think Supreme Commander winds up last for me despite my loving Total Annihilation.
#24 Posted by Unstoppable_1 (2005 posts) -
Definately Warhammer 40k. It's not alwaysa bout blowing the enemies base. There are more interesting things to do like rescue servitors, capture strategic locations and much more.

People seem to forget this is a RTS game where singleplayer storyline, multiplayer, competitveness and balance is king..And in all those regards Starcraft kicked the crap out of Dawn of War.. This is coming from some one who loves Warhammer 40k universe.. DoW had serious problems in its entire system to the point where really only 1v1 were anywhere competitve and even then tehre are huge imbalances.. The singleplayer wasn't worth much either..

#29 Posted by Forerunner-117 (8800 posts) -
Wow guys, way to completely misread the OP lol. The TC is asking, "What is the best RTS?" NOT "What has the best universe?" Of course WH40K's universe pwns SC's universe! That's a given! Look at how many ****ing WH40K books there are, and then look at how many SC books there are. Yeah. When comparing the actual Ar Tee Esses (lol!), I think it's pretty easy to see that SC trumps DoW. Don't get me wrong, I love DoW (even though I'm fairly new to the WH40K universe) but for example, the balance in DoW is nothing compared to the balance in SC.
#30 Posted by JP_Russell (12893 posts) -

Warhammer 40K isn't an RTS, it's a fictional universe. Dawn of War is an RTS in that universe, and I far prefer it to Starcraft. Comparing universes, I like both, but 40K is again far preferential.

Correction, there are around 1000 space marine chapters at any one time in the whole galaxy.

i find SC gameplay much more fun IMO i could never really get into the whole squad based RTS and the forced capturing of stratigic points.
#32 Posted by GreaterthanG0d (452 posts) -

I'd certainly go with W40k. Regardless to who ripped off whom, warhammer 40k is a better game.

Almost any machine from the past 3 years can run it decently well, and the graphics are nice to look at on almost any setting. There is a large variety of races to choose from, and whilst the campaigns may not be top notch, you'll have a blast playing it.

Warhammer's universe appeals to me a lot more than Starcraft. Dawn of War is an absolute astonishment.

I prefer Dawn of War.

Won't make any difference though, this thread is bumped one. You'd think the TC would ALREADY have picked a game.

#38 Posted by om3ga_storm (402 posts) -
I feel the W40K RTSs offer a gritty and grim atmosphere, while Blizzard's RTSs offer a gameplay that addresses the idea of "having a good time". So i'd go with the latter. While dawn of war is great (one of my fav games), I feel that I had more fun with SC and will have more fun with SC2 then DoW 2 (as things look right now).

What date was Dune released? Doesn't Herzog and maybe even the sequel Herzog Zwei pre-date it?

DOW wins for me. Story is better, gameplay is better. Smacks it.

Sony and Nintendo where developing a CD console together before they split for whatever reason and made the N64 and PS1. Can't remember the reason now though... Was a few years back I suppose!

I would allways choose Warhammer over Starcraft , its original , has lots of expansions and lot of gameplay .

allso the story is better than in starcraft as i see it , gameplay is better , graphics is better everything is better .

Only thing that starcraft is better is that you can play it on a calculator
