I was thinking of just upgrading my graphics this card around rather than my whole computer (what i usually do) - budget is the issue so i thought i will give just a graphics card upgrade.

But want to know if this card the ATI 4890 will be able to go into my computer just fine.

What i currently have is

Processor: E6600 2.4Ghz
Ram: 2GB
Graphics Card Current: Geforce 7950 GT.

With the power supply and motherboard, how do i check them out? Is there a way to check them out while in windows? Like dxdiag (not listed there)?

Thanks.

Hi I have an E6600 at 2.4GHZ. You are going to see a big difference in video performance.

I have the 4870 and the 4890 is even better. As long as you have 500 Watts or higher

you should be OK.

4890 should work fine on P5B. About your CPU question, here's your answer. Just choose motherboard -> Socket775 -> P5B and you should see all supported CPU's.

i can't see why it shouldn't work, you can't crossfire it but a single card should work. All you need is a 16x PCI-E slot and enough power from the psu

Thanks guys. I will open my case later to check the power. I thought you would need maybe a big enough motherboard or something like that. Thanks for clearing it up.

Hi It just so happens I have the P5B motherboard. It is pretty good for an older board.

It has a P965 Northbridge. It hassingle PCI Express X 16 version1 slot. As I said in

the above post I have an E6600 at 2.4 Ghz and an ATI HD 4870 GPU. That board

will support the newer 45nm Core 2 Duos and Quads as long as the bios version

is 2001 or better. I bought the board in 2007. It has a very good overclocking

menu in bios. I made a test on my E6600 and got it to 3.6 Ghz stable on 800Mhz

Ram.

You don't even need to get a quad really, just buy a decent HSF and get that E6600 to 3GHz+ along with the new graphics card you'll get an amazing boost in performance.

Hey guys, thanks for all the info!

One question. The P5B you said is a Version 1 slot. The 4890 is a Version 2 correct?

Will there be conflict, or a big difference between V1 and V2?

Also, any tutorials or guides to overclock the motherboard etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi You will be OK using a version 2 card on a version 1 slot.

The cards are backward compatable. I tell you what. I think

you will find with that new card that you will have good results

with your E6600 at stock speed. One thing you have to be carefull

about is overclocking the CPU on the stock Intel cooler. You can

only overclock a little bit because the CPU will get too hot when

you are playing a game. Someone will recommend an overclocking

guide for you to study. Enjoy your new GPU.
