Why is it almost every game tries to update directx? there is like a new version every couple of years and how hard is it to check 9 from 10? i think i had some game tell me that i dont have the proper version and i need 9, even though i have vista. also that whole process is way too long unless there is something else to it(?)...

I think it's mostly a remnant of past times when new direct x versions were much closer together (check out the release history in wiki). I can remember being grateful a couple of times for publishers adding dx on the install disk. It's probably not necessary now, but not too long ago downloading a direct x installer would take a fair amount of time.

I see no harm in it though. You are usually given the option to update and if you do update while already having the latest, it should take a mere couple of seconds for the installer to recognize that you do.
