Any ideas of any great games for this genre both old or new? Looking more towards the space theme.

Not too sure about the space part, but Medieval Total war II was a great turn-based strategy game. I suppose now Empire: Total War is the latest total war game, I haven't played it but I'm pretty sure that's turn-based as well.

If you aren't looking for multiplayer GalCivII is by far the best turn based space empire game.

Ranked in order of greatness: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Disciples 2, HOMM5, Civilization 4, King's Bounty, Galactic Civilizations series, Age of Wonders series Anything else with Civilization in it. These are the only great ones I can think of right now. But definitely Alpha Centauri, it's a masterpiece, best TBS known to man!

Released: Heroes of Might and Magic III (with Armageddon's Blade and Shadow of Death), Heroes of Might and Magic V (with Hammers of Fate and Tribes of the East), Civilization IV (with Beyond the Sword), Disciples II (with Rise of the Elves), Etherlords II, Gladius, Elven Legacy, King's Bounty: The Legend (actually an RPG/TBS hybrid). Upcoming: Disciples III: Renaissance, Elemental: War of Magic.
