Total War because I like the strategy aspect of actual battles more than just city managing.

I personally like Total War much better. Not only can I build stuff, but I can also fight battles in real-time.

Have to go with TW, Civ is alright but I'm not a fan of the economics and battle system in Civ games compared to TW games.

I like Total War games better. I have played 2 games of each brand.

Civilization Evolution on Xbox360 left a bad taste in my mouth. I can't believe I paid 69.99 for it; I begrudgingly played it, but I didn't have a high opinion of it. I also owned Test of Time which I thought was excellent: Getting to play on another planet after you advance with earth was excellent. Test of Time also had more than 1 nuke. That is part of the reason I disliked Civ: Evolution, I can't understand how a game could go backwards and have less options than a game that is 8 years older than it.

Meanwhile Total War: Rome and Total War: Empire are both great games imo, and they have more action.

The battles are the primary aspect of the total war games, whilst combat isn't the main attraction in the Civ games, so they're quite different.

Both are good games, but I think Total War is in a different league, when it comes to quality/replayability etc. Also, the tactical battles in Total War is wayyyy more immersive to me, than battles taking place only on the campaign map.

I like turn based strat but the combat in those games are pretty simplistic and based more on stats. I prefer to be in control of my armies and be able to defeat a superior force with superior tactics, gives me great satisfaction when I win.

Inbetween the to I prefer Civilization. However I will play any Paradox game over it if I want strategy. My next Victoria 2 game will be to play Manchuria and Remain independant from China while being communist.

I'm not a fan of turn strategy. Obv civilization is clearly best at that aspect, as thats the main point of it. In Total War, the turn map side is lame and boring.

Civilization is not bad, only that it takes you so much time, and you realise at the end that all that time you spent playing wasn't worth the little enjoyment you had.

I like total war the best, but for the rts battles. When i'm in the map i'm brainlessly trying to fight something so i get thrown into the rts battle :P

Both. Civ is more like a relaxing board game. Total war is much more intense, and demands more of your' time.

This comparison pains me. Those franchises complement each other perfect, it's hard to pick just one, you definitely want BOTH!

That said, I'd say Civilization has maintained a higher quality across the years, so it would be my pick.

I would pick Total War personally. I like the real-time fighting a bit better than the turn base goodness when it comes to strategy games.

I prefer the Total War series over Civilization. While it has a less detailed city management, the military aspect keeps players more engaged, similar along the lines to Sins of a Solar Empire. Though Civilization is complete turn-based strategy game while Total War is a hybrid of TBS and Real time-tactical game. They differentiate a bit too much to really compare them under the same genre. More appropriate would be something along the lines Civilization series vs Endless Space.

This is exactly how I feel. I enjoyed Rome TW more than any other TW or CIV game, but for me, each new CIV game has been better than the last. I'm counting brave new world btw.

For me, Sid Meier's Civilization and the Total War games are two different beasts, and I play them each depending on the mood I am in. I really don't care for the combat system in Civilization V, so when I play Civ 5 it is to build up a civilization into greatness. I focus on more peaceful victory conditions like building the Utopia Project to gain a cultural victory or sending a ship into space to gain a scientific victory.

When I play a Total War game it is to relive different time periods of history where I am building an nation to become the most dominant empire around. It allows me to fight battles the way it was fought during those times. It is a very realistic game.

So to cap: Civilization is a civilization building strategy game, but the Total War games are empire building wargames.

I think it depends what Total War you talking about as the quality and style varies quite widely. For me though, Shogun 2 is probably the best epic strategy game made and the best "Japan" themed game. It's not perfect, the elephant in the room "AI" is still problematic. But everything else melds together so well. It's a game full of character that feels really, incredibly iimmersive.

FOTS (the expansion) deserves credit as well, when your culture changes after many hours and many turns, the music changes as does the landscape. It's subtle but very cool and ambitious how they attempt to encapsulate industrialization from Western influence. It's not intimidate and contrived like other games, it borders on almost not noticeable. The gun battles are sadly weaker compared to Napoleon.

The multiplayer component of Shogun 2 (although imbalanced as ****) is pretty fun. You can also use player drop in (most people and pussy cats and thus don't use it) to make up for shitty AI.
