Diablo is not quite a RPG in the sense that the others are.... but a good list, IMO.
Also: Planescape, Eye of the Beholder, and the first Might and Magic.Â
All my fave RPG games were back on the Playstation, however KOTOR has the be the best PC has to offer.
 1. Diablo II
2. Diablo
3. Planescape: Torment
4. Baldur's Gate
5. Deus Ex (I think it's 5 years or older, can't remember off hand)
SystemShock 2
Fallout
Ultima VII
Balder's Gate
Planescape:Tormentthusaha
system shock is a FPS
im not the person to ask about RPGs. Don't play much of them. But I remember Baldur's Gate, and Fallout

System Shock, as well as the Deus Ex series, are considered RPG's. Even though they are of the FPS genre, they feature character and story development in the most RPGs. I wouldn't say that every game that features RPG elements are RPG's, but those two game series are.
Fallout
Arcanum
Fallout 2
Baldurs Gate 2
Baldurs Gate
Â
Honorable mentions:
Arx Fatalis
System Shock 2 - not a pure RPG but a FPS/RPG hyrbrid
along with;
Deus Ex 1
Icewind Dale I
Icewind Dale II
Â
-Fallout 1&2: The classics. The best RPG's ever in my opinion.
-The Elder Scrolls: Morrinwind & Daggerfall: Some of the best ever, Oblivion was not a RPG, it was a sucky mess.
-Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines & Redemption: Very good RPG's, cool setting and high replay-value.
These are my favorites.
Â
1. Fallout
2. Fallout 2
3. Planescape: Torment
4. BG 2
5. KotOR or HoMM 3 or Deus Ex (can't really decide)
Five years hmm?
Â
1.Fallout
2.Darklands
3.Planescape:Torment
4.Betrayal at Krondor
5.Ulima VII

Heh. Some of those games are a wee bit older than five years. ;)
Â
I have Krondor boxed on loads of floppy disks.Â

You should watch the Richard Garriott interview. I think you would agree with many of his points.
1. Betrayal at Krondor (Best RPG ever)
2. Fallout 2 (Bigger and better than 1)
3. Darklands (this one is really old)Â
4. Lands of Lore
5. System Shock (someone above mentioned its a FPS but its kind of a cyberpunk RPG imo)
crapdog
That game was awesome. I love Baccata.
My List:
1. Planescape Torment
2. Morrowind
3. Baldur's Gate II
4. System Shock II (I guess I would have placed it higher. But the things making it better than the other are the things making it less of an RPG and more of a FPS...)
5. The Elder Scrolls: Arena... Go play. You can get it for free at elderscrolls.com... You'll probably need Dosbox.

DIablo 2 and DIablo 1 gets taken off since its a hack and slash, therefore its not a "clazzic" RPG to me (clazzic meaning DnD system). I'd replace them with Fallout 2 and Planescape, maybe even Neverwinter Nights since that was my introduction into the RPG genre.
PS why does gamespot keeping editing words with a s s such as cl a ss ic and make me spell them clazzic?
1. Baldur's Gate (The most genuine D&D implementation on PC in terms of feeling and atmosphere, plus the best and most intriguing story ever in a game)
2. Planescape: Torment (Awesome story and rpg elements)
3. Baldur's Gate 2 : SOA (Fantastic sidequests and subplots, didn't like the whole Irenicus thing main story though)
4. KOTOR 1 (It's only flaw is that its too linear and subquests superficial)
5. Fallout 2 ( Better than the original)
Might & Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven.
Baldur's Gate (Including Tales of the Sword Coast).
System Shock 2.
Elderscrolls III: Morrowind.
Might & Magic VII: For Blood & Honor.

what are you talking about? Last time I checked, "hack and slash" is not a genre. Look up Diablo II, It will tell you that it is an RPG.
What you said is just like saying that Call of Duty isn't a FPS, it is a historical FPS, so it is not technically a first person shooter.Â
lol, funny seeing hack n slash games in a best rpg games thread...oh well..play some real rpg's people..
 1)ultima 7(the black gate,silver seed,serpent isle)...no game even cmes close..all the three were awesome..

You comment on the hack and slash style games and tell others to play real rpg's, but list Final Fantasy 7 as your number 3...gimme a break.
Anywho my 5 are:
Daggerfall
Neverwinter nights
MorrowindÂ
Gothic II
Icewind DaleÂ

To be fair I think that Gothic 2 has a lot more depth than an average action rpg. I think it's a pretty good roleplaying game.

I'm so glad a few other people remember and recognize Betrayal at Krondor! I thought I was alone, having read all those "best games of all time" threads that were absent a B@K mention.
In no particular order, and keeping in mind the 5yr+ time requirement:
1-Betrayal at Krondor
2-Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (ToB exp. was good, but not as good as SoA)
3-Might and Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven (awesome until that sci-fi laser and spaceship crap at the end.)
4-Hillsfar
5- Wizardry 8
It was tough to pick 5 of the best, especially since RPGs are my favorite genre and I've played so many of them throughout the years, but BG2 and B@K were definitely no-brainer entries to the list.
3-Might and Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven (awesome until that sci-fi laser and spaceship crap at the end.)

i can only explain it like that - the devs couldnt make it before deadline and started to take drugs to work faster
and then came the spaceships...Â
Demons/beings from other planets have played a role in these games since at least Might & Magic II; this was not a case of just "slapping it on" at the end. All throughout M&M VI there are plotlines & references to the "demons." This was planned from the very beginning...
 My picks:
-Fallout
-Planescape
-Might & Magic II
-Might & Magic VI
-Reserved for when my memory kicks in....Â
in no particular order:
Â
Planescape:Â Torment
Baldur's Gate 2 + addon
Might and Magic VII
Ultima IV
The Bard's Tale (for the C64)
(it's REALLY hard to not have honorable mentions)Â
And for the record, hack-and-slash is the building block of ANY RPG, because most RPGs require you to kill rats, then orcs, then goblins, then trolls, then giants, then dragons, etc etc etc to build your characters up. To dismiss something like Diablo II as not being an RPG based upon its game sytle is a fallacy; to dismiss it because there is only one way to finish it is as well (because Ultima IV, THE grandaddy of all RPG games, can only be finished by a 'good' character).
