why is this tv so cheap?

1. Never heard of the manufacturer

2. Response time isn't the best.

3. Contrast ratio is pretty low.

but besides it not being a name brand like sony, samsung, how is it this cheap compared to tvs with the same features that sell for 900-1000 dollars?

It's so cheap because it probably is cheap, however you'll never know what you're missing since you won't have a Sony, Samsung or Sharp right next to you will ya ;) Personally i'd look at a 42'' plasma.
