8600 GTS is the minimum anyone should consider, if they want to run 3d games. As an example, if an 8600 GTS is similar to a 7900 GTX, you would be running games like Dirt, Need for Speed Carbon, Test Drive Unlimited and Spider-Man 3 on 1024x768 and low to medium details to barely hit 30fps. UT3 and COD4 might be ok on one, but don't even think you could run Crysis well.
Anyway, you will be playing on low details with an 8500 gt, if you want to get 30 fps, even if it does have 512 MB of ram.
Edit: Ok, I checked a review on guru3d.com of an 8500gt with 512 MB, and the best indication of the speed of the card would probably be FEAR at 1024x768 with 4xAA and 16xAF (the in-game 'maximum') - the card got 24 fps avg with the top of the line CPU in that machine. An 8600 GT (not even a GTS) got 50 fps in the same situation. Most people don't have a Quad-Core 6800 CPU, so most of the time their scores would not be as high.
