Your best bet will probably be a pair of surround sound headphones, you'll get great sound but only for yourself. There are probably some < $250 5.1 surround sound setups from Logitec you can look at. Try not to go the uber cheap route and slap together a setup with mismatched speakers, you'll have a pretty horrible sounding system, even with decent speakers. 7.1 surround sound is pretty much out of the question, but you might want to look at some systems that emulate surround sound using just 2 speakers.

you need to up your budget to $300. Then you can pick up a Onkyo HT-S3200 5.1 system.

its been suggested many times, and its the best bang for your buck

I am not familiar with this particular set up, but I have had many Onkyo systems over the years and I have always been happy with them.

Yes, the Onkyo setup is probably the best entry level setup available. Anything below that probably wouldn't qualify as a "nice surround system."

Nice piece of garbage. Understand you can't get anything that great at that price. Most people on the forums will push you to better stuff.

Just as an aside, if you plan on going for headphones (which is actually great if you're using it solely for yourself), NEVER go with surround sound headphones. Surround sounds headphones in theory give no better directional audio than stereo since you only have 2 ears and they're sitting right on top of them. Just go for some quality stereo headphones and you'll have great positional audio (bigger soundstage=better, Audio Technica ATH AD700=gorgeous sound stage).
