So i picked Core i5 2400 for very cheap along with Gigabyte Z68Xp-UD3 motherboard for $100 together to replace my AMD FX8150 and Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z which i will keep because Crosshair mobo is really nice until i can get some money saved up for AMD FX9590. Anyways i read everywhere on the net that overclocking a 2400 is impossible since its not K CPU and i actually tried and got it OC to 3.85mhz and ran prime95 for 5 hours successfully and the temps are cool 39C.

If you got a i5 2400, then you should be fine especially since you got an OC out that cpu. I've read that some of the locked ones can OC some, so its not surprising to me. :P But 3.85mhz should be fine for you and you can save that money.

I recently upgraded from a pair of 7870's, which are the same as your r9 270x's. Grabbed a 970, its really nice.

Are you sure it's not just turbo freq? Run 4 threads stress test and see if it's always at 3.85GHz.

Kitty your right i just checked out GPUBoss comparison with the i5 and 9590 they are pretty close no need to upgrade. I might just sell the 8150 and Crosshair mobo on Ebay for couple hundred. And Pfizer i just ran the test it says cores 4 and threads 4 at 3.84

You can OC it by increasing the bus speed, but the multiplier is locked. What was its original clocks (normal and boost)?

Non K versions are a bit overclockable. I have a friend that has some kinda i5 (1150 Socket) and he was able to get his non K version i5 from 3.4GHz to 3.8GHz on a Z77 mobo.

@horgen: It isnt "locked" like the i3. It is however limited. If your motherboard will allow you to adjust the multiplier, the i5 2400 can be OC'd up to x38 multiplier which is 3.8ghz. Then you can bump the bclk up to 104 and it is now OC'd to 3.9ghz. Im currently running all 4 cores on my 2400 at 3.9ghz, on an msi z77a-g65 motherboard.

The stock speed of the 2400 is 3.1ghz with a turbo of 3.4ghz.

Any non K processor can be OC'ed to the max Turbo Boost frequency, and on top of that you can also have Turbo Boost activated for it's normal benefits of 100mhz per core. So basically up to 800mhz on one core or 500mhz on all four cores.

From what I have seen in the web with a specific chipset you can up the multiplier even higher and apparently it's stable, but it just works with that specific chipset.

A non-K sandybridge i5 is "limited" unlocked. FSB is fully unlocked and the multiplier is locked at turbo + 400Mhz.

So if you manage to get a few + FSB Mhz, 3,85Ghz is possible...

Don't look at the FXAMD 9590, its a waste of money. That i5 2400 at 3.85 ghz will actually out pace that 9590 in most cases.
