I liked burnout paradise, but from my experience the online is dead (and complicated). You can drive around, find an event you'd like to play, but more often than not there'll be no one to race against. As far as I could tell there was no race browser system, so you couldn't just look for populated lobbies, etc. By itself, with a mostly empty multiplayer, it gets boring fast. Shame too, the burnout series has been awesome.

Don't worry, it won't be long before they're almost giving it away. It's already pretty cheap for such a recent release.
Definitely Burnout over that NFS crap.. NFS Shift was pretty decent but undercover was not so good. I would like to get Burnout myself but am worried about the dead community. I have already beaten the single player on my 360 so I would only be buying it for the online. Can anyone else comment about the online population?

It's not dead but not extremely active either, you can always find players, harder with bikes (since that's pretty much the only part of Burnout I liked) but even for bikes there are around 6-8 games or so going on, for cars around 16-20.
But you should give up if you want specific events, just play for fun, go at it one random event at a time, it's less frustrating than hoping to accomplish a specific event.
EDIT: Just checked, right now there are around 60 players online, I don't know how the multiplayer system works but I'm from Europe, no idea if it included US servers/players or if the US side of the game is alive/dead.

Crashing happens at random when you are starting up the game, or sometimes during gameplay which is rare.
