Pretty soon steam will become rather expensive to use for Canadians. With the passing of UBB in Canada bandwidth costs could be anywhere between $1-$2.50 per gigabyte, making an average game (say 10-15gB) cost anywhere between $10-$37.50 for the download alone. Don't take this sitting down! find out how you can help here:http://www.antiubb.com/what-can-i-do/

Also sign the petition:http://openmedia.ca/meter

There is a huge discussion going on about this at:http://www.reddit.com/r/canada/

Sorry for what is essentially spam, I know I haven't posted in this forum in a couple of year (university life has kept me busy), but this is an issue I thought Canadian PC gamers may be interested in. Please let your friends know too. And posting this to the PS3 and Xbox 360 forums may be useful as this will likely affect Canadians there as well.

Thanks for caring!

Its garbage, they want people to use cable tv instead of watching everything on tv. Alot of people use the internet for news, tv shows,etc... and these cable comapnys are gettign greedy. We already give them enough money, I really hope that this gets shutdown at sometime because its way over the top.

Doubt the petition will work, but I sure hope it does..

Bell Canada is one of hte main people behind this ):

Shaw also will be affected. I hear that some of the smaller companies wont do this, but thats not an option for people in smaller communities were its eitehr shaw or Bell.

I really hoep this gets overturned... we are not a poor country and yet we are rated like 27th/30th for internet prices and speed. Government needs to be stopped imo, its nto our fault that people are using the internet instead of there crap cable tv.

Netflix, Itunes,etc.... many have alot of invested in Canada now and this would pretty much cut them out of the canadian market.

I thought bell was forcing Teksavvy to limit bandwidth because they use Bell's infrastructure. Do you know if people using Rogers or Bell (not Tekasvvy) will actually be affected though?

Yes and no, Bell I believe has already had this implemented on their network. So their customers will not be affected in the sense that they were already being ripped off =P. But yes in the sense that Bell will have 25gig limit, plus about $1/gig overage charge. (more or less depending on if you buy insurance and how much over you are)

Well that's not too bad then. Bell is currently a lot better than rogers. I pay $46.99 a month at Rogers, for 60GB cap, 10 down and .5 up. For $0.50 cheaper, Bell offers this: http://www.bell.ca/shopping/en_CA_ON.Fibe-16/DSLTIMONNewMassNCOMX04.details plus an extra 20GB for $4 or something like that.

Hmm. I'm with bell and I'm 99% sure we are on an unlimited connection that is no longer offered. Speed kinda sucks (7mbps) but hey it's unmetered :D Don't think this will have any affect on me, but I'm still very disgruntled over the ridiculous bandwidth caps these companies are enforcing. I'd very much like to upgrade my connection speed, but no way am I signing on with anything that has a bandwidth cap. It's bad enough they throttle torrents....

Download limits should be made illegal. It probably costs them less than a cent to give you one gigabyte. I feel really bad for everyone affected by download caps, here in the US I don't think such a thing exists as I have never even worried about it.

I always had a cap on my Bell line at 60GB. When I download more, I have to pay per GB over. I honestly never had a problem with it, I went over the cap a few times, but that's during something like Steam holiday sales. If you also use your connection for watching online movies or shows, then yeah I can see it being a problem. I realize that some people have theirs capped at 20 or even 15GB. That sucks. Petition signed.

Corporate greed, ever growing and consuming... What about after the collapse of the global monetary market, Are they still gonna worship the dollar as divine? (or realize that money has become truly irrelevant)?

How about the passion these fools have to make profit, be put to something worth while, like a sustainable society for the entire planet.. Seriously the only benefit of this (LAW) is to make you not be able to stream content on the internet. (so you have to pay for it elsewhere) So you have to buy cable tv, or satellite, (not to mention a final move on the retail market for games as well as movies) this is a way of regulating, and hindering the biggest communications device to reach billions of people (the internet).... (it must be protected, so things like this LAW, need to be removed period)

This would seriously affect the profit margins of many companies who make their money off streaming content on the web...can't see this sticking TBH. But it's definitely worrisome nonetheless, the public murder of the middle class continues on.

Limit does really suck. Just recently it went from 30 to 40gig limit for me which is insane just normal internet use is like a gig a day. I pay 40-50 bucks for a game and have to wait till my account resets to download it.

Its lack of competition. Here in Montreal its Bell for dlsl or Videotron for cable.

The caps that are already in place are just ridiculous. My family pays $50 for a 60GB cap. I hit it every month because apparently with everything we do in the house, we use 2GB of that cap per day just doing simple tasks/gaming. I'll be pitching in more to get a higher cap of 125GB. That should be good... but god damn this paying by the gb crap better not go through...

Signed.

That is utterly ridiculous. Can you buy a monthly data cap instead of these prices, in a similar way to what we Australians have?

Bell is a terrible company with terrible service. They can go pound salt. Worst customer service ever.

However, because we have a contract with Rogers, they cannot change the fees until the contract is up. UBB or not, they will be breaking the contract. They would have to either void it (at which point we just switch elsewhere) or honor it.

Who here remembers City Fido? Unlimited service for a tiny price. That was shut down years ago and people STILL have them. Why? Because they were contracts that people kept re-newing and Fido has no choice but to continue to support it. Impositivethis will work in a similar matter.

I'm already downloading most of my Steam games and storing them as backup in another pc which i use as a server for printing/filesharing at home. Steam is gonna collect dust for me once the cap is placed :/ Games like Witcher are 15GB already on their own... that's 1/4 of my bandwitdh already (60GB cap since I'm in Quebec with Teksavvy)... sigh

Its the same prices for the same specs, really. If you work Rogers a bit like a lot of people do, they give a lot of breaks and discounts. We got a lot of them and have a pretty decent set up by canadian standards. Believe it or not, as bad as Rogers is, Bell support is much worse.

From what I've been reading, this affects only DSL? I may just switch to Teksavvy cable, which now that I look at it is almost the same price with better speeds :) They only just said it was available in my area.. it never was when I checked before.

I have both Bell and Rogers internet. Right now I'm using Bell, and the Rogers line is reserved for our Internet TV. I've switched them a few times in the past, but I found Bell's line much more reliable, better speeds, charges less (even compared to our 'Rogers Bundle') and the device I got is a modem-router two-in-one rather than the crap model that Rogers provided.

The canadian government would be far better off implementing some actual copyright laws and shutting down the multitudes of rogue hosting companies and "privacy protection" services that have set up shop there as a result of their lack of any stance at all on copyright infringement which is nearly as bad a problem there as it is in Russia or China and in the latter it's positively encouraged by the authorities in order to damage the interests of western businesses. Lord knows the creative industries would pay mega-bucks for it to happen as well.....

Online gaming uses up very very little bandwidth, the only issue is actually downloading the game. The only issue I can see MMO's having is when they get large content updates... which doesn't happen often. Steam will obviously not be worthwhile anymore... unless you're just purchasing games that are small in size.

Yeah I'm pretty shocked about it, actually. When was the last time the public actually got something changed? :) We let them do all sorts of extra taxes, enable laws that allow police offers to be judge and jury, but G-D if they ever mess with our internets!

Wait, I'm sure they will come back with something else to bite our asses. When something doesn't work, they just use something else to suck the cash up from our pockets. It's been like that since the dawn of time.

I'm glad they did, I'm not exactly a heavy downloader, but a 25GB cap is rather awful.

It was just for the small companies that buy their internet from Rogers and Bell, but by effectively setting the prices of their only competition Bell and Rogers could then lower their own caps and increase prices to ridiculous levels. I use Cogeco which has always been capped, $64 for 60 GB after tax, $1.50 per GB over the cap.. sucks but what are you gonna do. CRTC Ruling wouldn't have changed it either way. It's certainly not a victory for Canadian internet users, we are still getting the shaft just as much as we were before, this overturning just means a lot of people won't be getting even more than usual.

Yeah, I'm glad they did... it would be political suicide otherwise.
