Say that, i'm getting a PC with windows xp media center and an 8800 GTX. i'm pretty sure that you need vista to run direct x 10, and the card as well. but, if you just have the card, will it not work at all because i won't have vista? or will it just use direct x 9?

I,m pretty sure that DX10 is exclusive to vista though there might be some way to run it on XP.

The 8800GTX will run XP, Mediacenter and DX9 better than any other card out there right now.

Oh, and it also will run DX10. :D

No, I am saying the 8800GTX doesnt need Vista to work. DX10 is a Vista only thing.

Well, let me put it this whay, there is no way and never will be posible to XP run DirectX10, Why? because the DirectX10 was developed from 0 so why do you think that any GPU (ecept 8800) isnt able to play DirectX10. So its the same for OS, Vista was built in DirectX 10 so if you have windows vista and don´t have the right GPU, youll never see the all potential of vista and DirectX10 aplications.

So you need Windows Vista to run DirectX10, and the rith GPU

oh ok. man...thanks for helping me out.

also, sorry i don't mean to keep you guys, but will 1 GB RAM be enough for most games? i don't plan on playing games like crysis in the near future, but i mean for games like fable, company of heroes, and sims 2.

8800GTX works on XP and Vista, with ALL GAMES.
DX10 is only available on Vista.  So you will only be able to play using DX10 when you have Vista.  If you have XP, you'll be able to play the same games, but in DX9 only.

And yes, for now 1GB ought to be sufficiant to run most games well.  2GB is recommended though.

Right now with XP, 1gb is enough, though COH and other really intensive games would benefit from more. If you are thinking about Vista or playing 2007 games, you will most definitely benefit alot from 2gbs of ram.

Well, not to confuse the issue, but the Vista interface itself is DX9. Longs story short, DX10 wasn't ready when they were developing the Aero gui. Microsoft is also not going to publish an operating system that ONLY DX10 cards can run. So the OS itself (and most productivity apps, like email, browsing, word processors, etc.) will all run fine on DX9. So will the Vista Aero interface. DX10 adds some bells and whistles and performance improvements that Microsoft decided they would not try to make compatible with XP. So they layers DX10 on top of Vista, and if you have a card that supports DX10 you experience those extras and improved performance. But you do not NEED an 8800 (or the new ATI card) to run VISTA, nor the new games coming out for Vista. It will be a while before someone publishes a DX10 ONLY game...
