I built this computer about 1.5 years ago. Its an i7-950 - 3.06 Ghz. It is currently not overclocked. I have 6 GB of DDR3 RAM. My video card is GTX 285. I have been able to run most every game at max but i'm starting to run into situations where I need to dial down the graphic settings. Any advice?

Well, i'm not sure how this answer would affect your recommendation, but my screen resolution is 1920x1200 and the games that come to mind are Crysis, Metro 2033, and Mafia 2. They run fine, but require graphics turned down a bit. In Metro 2033 I had to actually turn down the screen resolution from my monitor's native.

metro 2033 is very hard to run as is crysis at 1080p its especially tough

mafia II is a suprise by my understanding its actually pretty easy to run

Well if your running into games that you can't play at the setting you want to play them at, then yes it would be a good time to upgrade. IMO the card that gives you the most bang for your buck would be the HD 6950 1GB. But if your looking to spend more the GTX 570 is also a great card. Whats your budget?

If you don't mind dealing with rebaits this is an awesome deal for $210 (Orginally $240 but has a $30 rebait). It may be a bit more than what you want to spend but the extra $10 is worth it.

Honestly though with only a $200 budget you can't really by a GPU that you'd see a huge increase in performance from your current one, so you may be better off waiting till you have more money to spend and thier is a game you really want to upgrade for.

Save up more money. You could go up to a GTX 295 now used on Amazon or E-Bay, especially if you sold your 285 at the same time, but the 285 already kicks minor butt. You want one of the new cards, a GTX 580 or 590, so you'll have DX 11 in case any of the game developers actually write anything worth playing using it. Be happy with the 285 if all you have is $200, it's a very good card. There isn't much that will give you that thrill you get from a new plateau, and nothing for that money.

Not worth it to play terrible games at high quality. I wouldn't upgrade until REAL AAA games come out that push your GPU.

What? Terrible games? Crysis is not a terrible game, and Metro 2033 isn't a terrible game either, I'll give you Mafia 2. Crysis 1 may not be your cup of tea, but it is by no means a poorly made game which is what the word Terrible describes.

if you can sell your card on craigslist/kijiji for a decent amount, then you'll be able to add that to the $200 budget you have and get a decent card like a 6950 2gb.

True, it wasn't that bad, but compared to Mafia 1 it wasn't that good either.

Really appriciate the feedback guys. I will wait until DX11 becomes more mainstream / utilized. Will also wait until I start running into more serious annoyances with my system. Also, I checked on the card I have and its 1 GB so it must still be pretty good. I paid $350 for it less than 2 years ago. I just had heard about the 400 series and now the 500 series and figured mine was only a 200 so it must be pretty much ancient by computer standards.

I dont see a point in upgrading just because you have run into trouble maxing out older games that are hard to play to max to begin with. Stick to your card and consider upgrading when new games begin requiring you to lower your settings for playable fps, not old ones.

Crysis may be pretty and all, but it hardly has any replay value. My 4850 has been going strong at 1080p. These games that push it are not worth a few hundred dollars for a new gpu. Name me ONE game that I won't shelve, that can really push my GPU, after beating its 10 hours (If your LUCKY) single player? While the games I find myself playing constantly run likes champs. Because quite frankly until we have new consoles GPU upgrade are a bit of a joke, and I don't feel like throwing down the money to be able to see the fancy GFX of that ONE AAA title that came out on PC only. And to top it all off... his card blows mine out of the water.

Sell your current gpu for like $120 on ebay and spend an extra $30 to get a 570. I sold my 4890 on ebay for $100 and bought a 570 for whats basically a $250 swing.

I'd say start taking off AA..... always take off AA before you make that decision. At your res it makes no real difference but the performance hit is quite large.

Name me a good game the 285 can't play? Besides the loss of DX11 I don't think you'll find one. The difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS does not need a new card.
