Hey guys, I beat the Witcher 2 on Dark mode 8 months ago and I was wondering if I should try TW1. I played TW1 for about 5 hours, years ago and I thought it was pretty boring till I got to end of of Chapter 2.

Should I give it a go or should I re-play TW2 again? Thanks

*EDIT* POSTED THIS ALREADY IN THE TREAD.

After playing TW2, I must say that I enjoy TW1 more than previously. I'm 18 hours in (still in Chp. 2) trying to complete most of the quests to get the most lore out of it. IDK why but I feel like I need to have a beer everytime I play TW1. I just imagine Geralt like a badass medieval 007.

Booze, women, action.

LOVE THE GAME! I'd recommend it to everyone. I very much enjoy it and I shall be playing TW2 once again.

I recommend playing TW2 in dark mode. It just feels satisying. But, you should definitely read up on builds. It IS VERY IMPORTANT to have the right build on dark mode difficulty. Otherwise it will just be annoyingly frustrating.

It's up to you. I love TW1, more so than TW2, which was also a fantastic game. However, the game picks up in Chapter 2 so if you beat Chapter 2 and were still bored the game just might not be for you.

Personally, I think that TW1 is a much better game than TW2. So yeah, go ahead and play it. :)

This. I enjoyed TW1 so much more than TW2, albeit TW2 is still a great game.

It's the better game in my opinion. The most atmospheric game I've ever played.

No.

TW1 is awful and should only be used to treat insomnia.

I'm pretty sure they don't sell the vanilla edition anywhere anymore. And even if they did, you can use the cd-key to register the game at GOG and download the EE from there :)

If you played The Witcher 2 with the controller, I'd pass on the first one. The first one doesnt support the Xbox 360 controller. I dont like playing games when it doesnt support the 360 controller.

And how does this relate to how good the game is?

But oh well. Your loss.

@GiantAssPanda:

There is an easy software called xpadder, I used that on TW back in the day to make the 360 work, and it did just fine! Get xpadder, then assign the buttons and voila!.

Why? I don't have issues gaming with m&kb.

Besides, I don't see the point playing the first game with a controller anyways since the UI is pretty much as gamepad unfriendly as I can possibly imagine.

I've played both games multiple times.

If you already played TW2, TW1 will be hell, the only good reason to play it is to carry the save onto TW2, but that would mean you'd have to beat TW2 again to use that save.

Look, the plot is nothing fantastic, most sidequests are simply fetch quests. Combat is horrible, HORRIBLE, whoever says that TW1 has nice combat is definitely on some hardcore drug like PCP. The combat is completely random, it has horrible user feedback, animations are out of sync and thus its confusing, for example sometimes you take huge damage or you are knocked back yet the enemy in front of you didn't even moved, because enemy animations never play correctly.

If you want to do it, then go ahead, play it, but really, it will be a horrible experience.

And whatever you do, DO NOT download the full combat rebalance mod, it does not improve combat at all, it only makes the combat even more random and it's nigh impossible to beat (I could never get past the first boss in chapter 1).

The mod is completely dumb, it kind of forgets that combat is not dynamic, so it puts a lot of features on enemies that would be good on a dynamic combat game like TW2, where your skill would actually let you overcome obstacles. The result is the game being ridiculously hard with no way to counter these hardships.

Imagine a turn based RPG mod that would turn every single enemy at the beginning of the game into a level 100 boss, while you're still a level 1 char, under the grounds of "making the game's combat more challenging". That is pretty much what the FCR mod is.

You should do be warmed the TW1 is your classic style RPG, so there is alot of fetch quests, and the combat is meh at best. But the second half of the game is great.

The gameplay is pretty dated, but I much preferred the story, characters, and missions in the first.

Put in 30 hours so far and I just reached Chapter 3. This is by far one of the best if not the best RPG that I have ever played. It's so different, so unique, that I don't understand why it hasn't gotten more popular over the years. The lore...oh gawd the lore is oozing out of this game. So many interesting things to read from the journals, characters, settings, etc.

This playthrough of tw1 is definitely giving me a different perspective on sides and will definitely side with the scoia'tael forces in my next playthrough of tw2.

Yeah and the second chapter has the most by far - the chapters after aren't as bad if you're a completest. :)
