I recently got my new xfx8800gts 320 xxx editionand haven't been getting more than 60 fps in any of the games i've been playing. F.E.A.R.highest settingsat 1024x768. Lost planethighest settingsat 1280x1024. And UT3 Demo highest settings at 1680x1050. Are these good or should I be getting higher fps.

Depends on the rest of your system.

I'm not complaining, I was just wondering if I was getting the right performance. Also when I looked up benchmarks for this card they were getting like 20-30 more fps in F.E.A.R.

Some of my other specs are windows xp, E6600, and 4gb of ram(i'm thinking it could be the 4gb of ram since i'm using xp)

No you shouldnt....FEAR brings many system to there knees as well as those other two games so yes 60 frames is not bad..

In fact, Maximum P.C. magazine has used FEAR in there benchmarks for quite some time now to test some seriously powerful rigs and videocards.........

All i was saying is that anything above 40 fps is fine, but it would really depend on your processor and ram too. Also you should get the latest drivers for your card

Do you set V-Sync off in games? Because if its on it limits the max FPS.

yes, very good performance if you are getting 60 fps most of the time.

I think older machines r underrated, with some good components, a little more memory and a fine graphic card an old machine can give very good performances.

Ihave an athlon 64 x2 3800+ s939 with 4 gb ddr 400 and a brand new geforce 8800 ultra (used to have 2 geforce 6800gs)

and the system is not the same, ran bioshock max with 1680*1050 with confortable frame rates, before i had to put it in 1024*748 with some frame dropout. Never will i trust sli again, ok unless were talking about 2 geforce 8800 ultra of corse.

Assuming your system is newly built along with getting the 8800GTS 320 FEAR specifically should run at higher frames on average then 60. Like some have said though, vysnc might be on limiting the max FPS to 60.

V-sync is on, but i'm happy with the performance i'm getting. If it plays crysis that well i'll be even more happy.

I'm still wondering about the extra 2GB of ram that I have. Could that be what the problem is or is there nothing wrong with it?

I recommend to disable V-Sync.

Btw, why are you playing FEAR on such low resolution?

WOW, just turned v-sync off and was getting double the fps. At 1680x1050, I was getting between 120-140 fps and around 80 fps in more open/outside areas. Can someone tell me what v-sync does, and is it worth it to keep it on?

This is what vertical sync is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_sync

Basically, you shouldn't use it unless you're getting a lot of "screen tearing", which I wouldn't worry about with the hardware you have.

Yup, I have no problems with tearing myself.

Another good read about v-sync: http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_9.html

dahwnpapaya

If your framerate doesn't ever drop below 60, and you think 60 FPS is smooth enough, then keep it on, because you won't get any screen tearing. If your framerate drops below your monitors refresh rate with v-synch on, you will only get Hz/2 as framerate (30 fps). That isn't the actual framerate that your computer is producing but it's how many frames per second you get on the screen.

I have a similar system also with 8800gts 320mb. B4 with the same system I had a 6800gs 512mb. Using 3dmark I was getting a score of about 2700 (card was highly OC too). With the 8800 I get a score of around 7900 points (with a slight OC). An amazing difference just by replacing the gfx card, huh? However...

Because I always use Vsync on whenever possible and as my LCD runs at 60hz, I get 60 fps max.

60fps is perfect. Very few people can notice higher speeds and it's much better to have a game running at a more or less constant lower fps than a higher one that spikes & drops.

You should be pleased with your setup as it is. FEAR, CoH, Oblivion, etc' all on max!

Yup, great boost in performance. I never tried 3dmark with my old card(7300LE), but with the 8800gts I got about the same score as you did. On my old card I could only get about 20 fps in F.E.A.R. with almost everything on low.

So if my refresh rate for my monitor can go up to 75 Hertz, should I put it that high?

If it's a TFT monitor then probably not. The majority run at perfectly 60hz. You don't need more than 60fps anyway.

If CRT then if it can handle it I always found 80hz to be totally flicker free.

Remember that TFTs don't flicker at their native (optimal) resolution because of the technology used.

you don't need anymore fps than your monitors refresh rate, more fps will cause screen tearing and the game will look like sh1t , turn off v sync to see how many fps you are over your refresh rate just too see how easily your gpu is handeling the game. but other than that you should always have vsync on so you have smooth game play
