I saw these on head-fi the other day. The preview of them seemed too glowing to not be hype. I'm sure they sound great, though

The question comes to mind, why not just spend a couple hundred more and get used HD800s? Then again, the sound might be different enough from the HD800 to create a case of preference.

Once you enter that price range you also get some heavy hitters, such as the HiFiMAN HE-6 (1.3k) and the Audeze LCD-2 (1.0k).

Meh: I'm done with Sennheiser. They might sound great, but for me - with an extra-large head - they are always crushingly tight. From the 202's to the 555 and 598s, I just can't wear them.

Considering how comfortable models from AKG (Q701), Audio Technica (ATH-A and ATHADs), and Grado are I cannot justify Sennheiser's vice-like grip across their product line.

I like the feel of the HD800s, if these fit anything like them I'm sure they'll be comfortable even with an extra large head.

Excessive? Well you could say that, then again there are many headphones which cost a fair bit more. Even after you spend a lot on the headphone, there is still additional costs for the amp/DACand possibly a balanced cable.

Well considering there are speakers that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, it seems petty in comparison. :P

Then why do peoplebuy the $100,000+ cars? cars below that price work fine.

That's nothing. Try $5,000 for a Stax SR-009, along with another $2,000-5,000 for an electrostatic amp to drive it properly. Or, if you can find one, $12,000 minimum for the discontinued Sennheiser Orpheus HE/90 headphone + HEV/90 amp. The one I saw on eBay sold at that price within the first day or two it went up. There's another one floating around, but the seller's trying to get a whopping $35,000 for it. There's a reason they greet new Head-Fi users with "Sorry about your wallet."

At the very least, audio gear doesn't depreciate nearly as hard as computer parts (just wait a few years and people will dismiss the HD 7970 as some crappy card from years ago), so they can resell it all to someone else and lose less money...or maybe even profit, in rare cases. Still, there's a line that even I'm not willing to cross while learning about what makes Head-Fi users tick. While I've become rather fond of the Stax Lambda series, they're still a bit on the expensive side, ranging from $200 (if you're really lucky) to $500 and well beyond that, depending on the headphone and amp used. SR-007, let alone SR-009, is just ridiculous. Oh, and I didn't even mention specialized devices like the Smyth Realiser, a DSP that simulates surround speaker setups using recordings from earbud microphones you insert into your ears for a personalized HRTF. It costs over $3,000, somewhat less if you tell them to not include the Stax SR-202 + SRM-252S system they include by default...but they justify it by saying that it can effectively simulate speaker systems costing MILLIONS of dollars!

I'm with you, I've had headphones snap in half for me after a few months :?

The ATH-AD700's fit me really nicely though, I'm hoping they last.
