Is a little faster than the 8400 but nothing that can justifies 200 ( i think it cost 200 ) to change from the 8400. Software including games they usually dont take advantage of 4 cores with a few exceptions ( only recently software that is optimised for 4 cores appeared). Even if a game is optimized for 4 cores the 8400 is one of the fastest dual core and one of the fastest processors overall so imo either you should stay with that processor or if you have money you can go to the new intel platform ( x58 motheroboard and an icore7 cpu) which offers significant speed boost over past cpu's including the latest quad cores like q9550

Imo i suggest staying with the 8400 get a good aftermarket cooler ( i like coolermaster and arctic cooling zalman is also good but a bit expensive ) and overclock it ( it will go easy to 3,6-3,7 ghz).

If he takes that route, I can vouch for the Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro. Its cheap, performs great (especially when you consider price) and uses the best, at worse, second best, thermal paste on the market. If you don't mind push pins, I definitely recommend this.

same cooler i have. Indeed is very good for its price ( the difference from the standard intel cooler in my case was 10-15C)

56C is a bit hot if it's going to be running at that temperature a lot. I agree with everyone else that there's no real need to upgrade your processor just yet. It will definitely last you at least another year or so.

Mine hits 67c while playing (i live in a really hot place), and it's just fine, well maybe it's because I just stopped caring about the temps.

That's only a few degrees away from the maximum temperature for many processors. I try to keep mine under 50.

I know someone that upgraded from an E8400 to a Q9550, he said that he was quite happy with the results, and with a decent heatsink the Q9550 will oc to 3.8GHz no problem from what I have read and seen from other people. If I wasn't such a noob at overclocking I would give it a try with mine, 3.4GHz was a piece of cake for a complete noob like me for my 1st overclock, so I may still give it a go anyway.
