Currently i have a desktop with
pentium D 915 2.8GHz
2.5GB ram
Asus 9600 GT

So, i am wondering how big the difference would be in games if i change my processor to a Core 2 duo E6550. Because now i couldn't run the games with the expected frame rate so i doubt is my processor.

Depends what motherboard you have. If you get a Core 2 Duo, it's more than likely it's not compatible. I have a Penitum D Processor, both cores running at 3.0ghz. And I would need to get a brand new motherboard for it to support Core 2 Duo and/or Quad Processor.

I upgraded from that same processor to a AMD Athlon dual core 64bit 3ghz and the upgrade was insane

You'd probably see a fair increase - but I wouldn't get the E6550, you've got a better chance of the E4500 being compatible.

Darn.. i just found out that my board could only support processor of 1066 FSB for highest. Btw, i have a Intel DP965LT.. it supports
Intel Core 2 Quad processor in an LGA775 socket with a 1066 MHz system bus
Intel Core 2 Extreme processor in an LGA775 socket with a 1066 MHz system bus
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor in an LGA775 socket with a 1066 or 800 MHz system bus
Intel Pentium D Processor in an LGA775 socket with an 800 MHz system bus
Intel Pentium 4 Processor in an LGA775 socket with an 800 or 533 MHz system bus
Intel Celeron D Processor in an LGA775 socket with a 533 MHz system bus

I actually thought if the mobo have the compatible socket then would be all right.

No need to be troubled.

Just go for the Core 2 Duo E4500 as Rayvin said.

It seems that the E6550 is much more superior than the E4500 from the specs given. is there any other model performs between these two? I'm asking a lot because I just wanna make sure what I pay is worth for it :P

Besides, I wouldn't overclock the processor. And what is this L2 cache means? What is the peformance impact between 2mb and 4mb?

It's not really all that much better - all those specs are nice, but price-performance wise the E4500 is a much better chip than the E6550 (and your motherboard doesn't support it anyway). The extra cache doesn't come into play all that much, and the extra memory bandwidth doesn't noticeably affect performance. The E6550 is a better chip than the E4500, but not considiering how much more it costs.

Or you could wait until the price drops on the Core 2 Quad chips drops this month, you might be able to get a Core 2 Quad for surprisingly cheap.

Yes you cant overclock so it's worth getting as fast a CPU as you can.Go for the E4700.
