Hey all, planning on buying a new video card for shogun total war and some other games that will require more power. Currently running a 9800 gt from like 2 or 3 years ago. Don't even wanna try metro 2033 on it. Which card would you guys recommend ? I was looking at the gtx 470 for 270 dollars on newegg. My other specs are core 2 duo at 4 ghz, 4gb ram, vista 64 bit and an old motherboard but it does have pci express 2.0 x16 slots. Will be running at 1680x1050 so would you all recommend a gtx 470 or are there newer cards coming out soon ? Also will the 470 fit in an antec 900 case? Thanks for any help !

I would go with a 6870 over a gtx 470 since the two trade blows and the 6870 is cheaper.

It will fit, i have a gtx580 in that case. I would take a gtx570 for more silent and better cooling or wait for the 560 TI that be released in few days if i where you.

Thanks for the help so far guys. Would you suggest I wait for the 560 ? I don't plan on spending over 300 dollars. Will the 560 be better than the 470 ?

I just got the GTX570, it is long right around 10.55 inches. Mine is the EVGA one.

It is silent and cool, it is much cooler than my 8800gt ocx sli. It is easily as quiet, but I haven't really gamed with it yet, I just installed it not 2 hours ago.

(reduced my cpu temps overall a pretty decent amount)

It barely fit in my case without removing the hdd cage. I had to come in at an angle though, but It fits with about a half inch between it and the hdd cage.

I have a modified NZXT Backline case.

But the 560 should be a bit shorter, and it comes out in like a week or so.

My gf runs a XFX HD6870 and it is pretty good especially for the price. I wouldn't count it out.

might want to take a look at the 1gb HD6950 as well, they should be below $300 (not sure when it comes out, but it shouldn't be too long).

Ya the cards is big but its np to put them in a antec 900. The powerconnectors is faced towards the casedoor and not towards the harddrive cages as the 5770 cards do. That makes it even easier connect, really hate the connectiors place on the Ati/amd cards that make it tight if you have a harddrive at same height as the graphic card when use a small case.

Thanks for all the advice so far. Was wondering though is it that big a difference in 1680x1050 between the gtx 470 and the 570. Its 100 dollars more for the 570 was wondering if I will notice a difference in shogun total war when it comes out.

this review shows the difference between the gtx 570 and 470 at 1680x1050. Its up to you to decide whether it is worth the extra $100.

Thanks, sir. Do you think there will be a price drop on the 500 series any time soon ? If not I may just get the 570 at the high price its at for a little future proof.

the 6870 is approximately $200 and has similar perforamance to a 470. You should get the 6870 and save some $$ or wait for the 1gb 6950 that are due to come out soon.
