We built a portal and it doesnt work. Can we not use portals in multiplayer or something?

Unfortunately, SMP doesn't quite have all the features of singleplayer survival yet:

It has been confirmed that portals do not work in multiplayer yet; while they can be created, they can not teleport you. However, server settings can be changed in order to create a Nether-like world in multiplayer.MinecraftWiki

Portals can be constructed in SMP but they will not teleport players to the Nether when entered.MinecraftWiki

It's getting there, though. It wasn't too long ago that it didn't even have mobs.

You can if you host a server using CraftBukkit and get a multi-world plugin.

Wow, that's an interesting project. Hadn't heard of this.

You can also start a world with the world type in your settings.ini file set to "NETHER" as opposed to "NORMAL" I believe... Pretty sure that works unmodded. But there is no way to travel from one world to another in SMP without mods (like craftbukkit) as JDBar said. Also the newest "word of notch" didn't have any mention of adding in functional multi-world support in the 1.4 patch coming up so craftbukkit is your best bet. But if you just wanna try out the nether with a friend, try modifying your servers settings.ini like I mentioned (backup your world before doing this)
