Hey all,

Thinking now might be the time to upgrade my PC, I'm thinking why not!

I was thinking of upgrading my x6 1100t for a fx-9590. Maybe even go for a bundle deal and get a new MOBO, RAM. I game at 1080p but want to increase performance. What do people say about this potential CPU upgrade? My spec Is in my sig.

Also my X6 1100t is overcooked to 3.8ghz

Cheers

Hello.

If I were you, I wouldn't go from X6 1100T which is already O/Ced to 3,8Ghz to an FX 9590. You need $300 for the CPU and an other $100 for a water cooling solution that AMD recommends.

Too much money for a side upgrade...

I think that atm there is no good upgrade for you. Its like telling people with 3570K to go for 4770K...

If you look at 1080P Gaming Benchmarks from Hardware Canucks you will see 20-25% upgrade. Is it worth for 20-25% more performance to spend more than $500? (and those numbers are without o/c, with your o/c the difference will be smaller)

I say go for a R9 290 / R9 290X / GTX 780 and you will see better upgrade. Unless you have a good GPU too...

In the end if you want to change your CPU no matter what, wait till September when Haswell -E will be out and you can buy a Haswell based 6-core for $400...

I wouldnt even bother with the FX 9000 series. If you have that type of money go with an i5 or even i7 because you will get more consistent performance.Games that only use 1-4 threads intel quads will cream the FX 8 core series. Even when games make use of 8 threads FX series will still come up short against i5's most of the time. and when you overclock those i5's its game over for those AMD cpu's.

AMD's FX series is actually slower clock per clock then your Phenom 2 , for example it takes a FX 4300 @ 3.8 ghz to beat a stock Phenom 2 X4 955 @ 3.2 ghz. the only reason to go AMD is if your on slim budget.

GTX780 or R9 290 would be a good upgrade, also FX8320/50 or i5 4670K would be excellent upgrade.

Cheers for the info guys. If i go for intel i would need a new MOBO and RAM which is more money. What would people recommend for an intel cpu upgrade, or if it would be worth it. Or maybe a new GPU. If you had around £350 what would you do?

Cheers

What's your current GPU?

If you have a low GPU, you can gain a lot of performance form a GPU upgrade.

If you have a good GPU then keep your money and wait till new tech will be out...

Keep your money.

Wait for Haswell-E and/or Maxwell.

September for Haswell and August for Maxwell (according to rumors).

Cause in order to see a good upgrade for £350 you need PC parts from the future :P.

Not bad. If you have a GTX 670 no need for upgrading. A new cpu will have the bigger increase for you. Phenom 2's are showing their age nowadays

@overhead_drums:

Maybe Scan.co uk's 3XS Z97 OC10 - Intel Core i5 4690K bundle, it comes with new haswell 4690k, its overclock for you to 4.6 ghz, comes with a decent cpu cooler too. Also comes with ASUS Z97 motherboard and 8gb 2133mhz DDR3 for £327.04 before taxes. Link to the page is HERE

@04dcarraher: It looks good. Would you say my MOBO is getting outdated as well? Because thats why I feel a CPU bundle would be best, make a change to Intel. Also I already have water cooling its a basic one shipped with my PC when i brought it from cyberpower about 4 years ago. I was thinking of upgrading that, but to what?!? air? water? My case has plenty of air flow with 8 case fans so would air be a good option?

Motherboards tend to be replaced by new sockets every couple of years on average which means yes your motherboard is outdated since it cant support AM3+ cpu's it being four years old. I like air coolers because if the pump dies there is no cooling at all at least with air if a fan dies you still have passive cooling. But its up to you But the cooler in that bundle most likely does as well as a job or better then cyberpower water cooler.

Then I'd go with 4670 or 90 (K version) and and a MOBO Z87 or Z97 just pick one, unless you aim for SLI in the future then it's a 100$ and above.

Don't worry about the RAM, unless it's dead there's no reason for upgrade.

@PredatorRules: would my ripjaws work on an intel mobo? I was under the impression it wouldn't.

So it seems as though I need a new mobo and CPU. I like the idea buying pre overclocked, I did manage to overclock my phenom myself but it did take a while. I felt proud of myself but would rather get someone else to do it...

Why wouldn't it be? you can apply any RAM on any MOBO

Get either the 4670K or the 4690K, both are awesome you get a little extra boost with the 90K thanks to different materials allows it to work with a higher clock rates and of course heat.

i7 is not worth it unless you do some editing or using heavy programs (i7 is the sweetspot between gaming and workstation)

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-4690K-vs-AMD-Phenom-II-X6-Black-1100T

It's almost double performance with single core comparison, it is more future proof.

Also if you're looking for a cooler I recommend on EVO, D14 or 100i.

Please avoid any CPU, GPU, w/e *boss* cause they have a lot of misinformation.

As you can see here CPU boss finds 4!!!!! reasons that Pentium 4 672 is better than i7 4770K. This is just rediculus...

Use Anandtech for a far far better comparison. Or Tom's Hardware. Maybe Tom's total time.

Gaming CPU Hierarchy Chart

I also agree with @PredatorRules on single core performance. Intel is by far unbeatable. +1 for EVO. for just $29 you can get enough cooling for reaching over 4,2-4,3Ghz...

In games like Skyrim which they are more CPU depending, the performance difference is huge.

For games like Dirt or Tomb Raider, the difference is small.

You may as well look with http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html the 4690K ranked at 123th while the 1100t ranked at 209th (but those are computing charts for heavy duty programs and not gaming)

PS. how the hell i3 managed to pass FX8350???

Ehm,.. well Passmark is the worst benchmark ever created. They have the worst results that they are not indentical to any real world programme.

As you said 4690K ranked 123th????. So there are 122 faster CPUs around? LOL...

At first I thought like you do that they are heavy threaded and they consume all the power a CPU/GPU can give.

Then I saw GTX570 rated higher than GTX590. I stopped reading this site and I deleted it from my favorite pages.

It is well known that FX 8XXX and the new 9XXX series are way better than Intel i7 for computing (at least something AMD excells at) but on the other than there's Intel top of the line workstation CPUs called Xeon, you might heard of them, every serious workstation has one.

Also there're 4500 tests of the 670 over 600 tests of the 690, I don't know how they rate it but maybe some people managed to either OC it extremely high or they've cheated the program.

I know about Xeons. Some of them are the same models as the non-professional ones that we use (like the E-1230). Lets take p.e the Intel Xeon E5-2620.

May I ask how in the hell this is faster than i5 4690K and Xeon E3-1275 (if you want a Xeon product)?

The problem is that I can found countless examples like this.

Also FX83xx are better than i5 for compute programmes, but I hardly found compute programmes that they are even faster than i7. There are some, but the compute programmes that i7s perform better are more...

As I told you before its not about something thats reliable. Avoid it unless someone threats you with a gun (I will still think about it...).

As for GTX670 vs GTX690. What can I say? It compares 1344 cores GPU vs 2x1536 cores GPU... No comment...

edit: Also haswell with the AVX2 instructions is a compute beast. Intel’s Haswell is an unprecedented threat to Nvidia, AMD

I call HACKS!!! XD

Yeah even if they did OC it extremely high, it is unusual to beat a dual GPU graphics card.

That reminds me someone at TechpowerUp forums that was saying: "You can always overclock 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM" haha XD

Nah their benchmarks have flaws. In CPUs it seems that they value a lot the MBs of Lv2 and/or Lv3 caches (I really cant find an other way to justify the positions of some CPUs).

On GPU part there is no logic at all :P.
