the-underdogs.info is a nice site for games that become public domain (eg: legally free)

I've heard many many people complain about having problems playing games from EA's digital distribution. Steam seems to be the best option. I havn't tried either, just going by what i keep reading.

Well, for starters you could actually use the store at www.gamespot.com . I mean, since your already here. But there is also www.gamersgate.com and www.stardock.com . There are others, but those are some of the biggest I can think of at the momment.
