I am currently running Windows Vista on my Laptop and lets just say ...it's a power hog. Is it smart to Upgrade to Windows 7 beta right now and buy it later when It releases or should I hold off?

On a side question, can I save my Vista profile and upload it on Windows 7?

I put the 32bit version of Windows 7 on my old laptop (2Ghz Core Duo, 2GB memory, GeForce 7900GS) and it ran great - no slower than XP, and some things seemed quicker due to the design changes of the OS. I believe the transition from Vista to Windows 7 is a lot smoother than XP to Windows 7, as there's an option to transfer your files and settings with Vista...XP requires a clean hard drive and a manual backup.

Are you saying I have to save my profile and then upload it after I instal Windows 7 or will it detect it when I boot up if I still have Windows Vista on my HDD?

You can upgrade pretty easily, although I think a clean installation after a format is better.

I would try the RC in a dual boot to make sure that you actually like Windows 7. That's what I did, and I found that I wasn't too fond of the operating system.... yet.

Use a partition manager, such as this one (free, good, I've used it before): http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Manager-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html It's pretty straight-forward. Just use SOME of the free space on the drive to create another partition. Be sure to label the new partition so you know which one to install Windows 7 on.

No problem. Just make sure to ask questions if you need to.

Does it allow you to shrink the current one? Im not 100% familiar with that partition manager. I usually use a a boot disk with a partition manager on it, also free to download called gparted. link

Did your computer come with Vista discs for reinstallation? I know a lot of manufacturers are getting cheap and turning your recovery discs into a recovery partition, so that HP partition might be Vista and your drivers.

30 gigs is enough (barely), but if you can give it 40-50 gigs that would be better.

I gave it 40, only problem is I'm having a hard time running the CD at startup. I tried going into my BIOS and putting the CD first but still normal start up.

I don't get it.

The week that RC1 came out I upgraded my 32bit Vista to RC1 on my work laptop. Everything has worked great.

1. I like the new menu system

2. I installed the Virtual PC software that coincides with RC1 and I am not disappointed with the performance.

3. My VPN client needed to be reinstalled, but worked fine after that (Cisco Anywhere client for ASA)

4. I'm running RC1 with 4gb of ram. I popped a chip out to see what it would be like at 2gb. (2gb is a minimum req in my eyes,4gb recommended, 4gb required if you plan to run virtual pc or server for any length of time)

But would I upgrade my gaming rig to RC1 ? hell no...

If you are trying to dual-boot, you will want to boot into Vista and run Windows 7 setup there. (However, when bootng off the DVD, you have to pay attention for the "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." prompt).

I upgraded my work laptop from Vista to 7. The UI upgrades and major networking improvements made 7 a keeper for me.

OT: I read on Tom's Hardware some dude got Windows 7 RC running on a Pentium 2 machine with 96MB of RAM.

It scored a 1.0 on the Windows Experience Meter lol. They think it would have scored lower, but the Windows rating system bottoms out at 1.0.

The fact that he got it running was interesting though.

I got better performance in DX9 going from XP to Win7. I'm not sure about Vista though. I tried the Longhorn betas and Vista RC's, but I've been waiting for Windows 7....
