No. Don't listen to the guys above. It's risky. Downloads are very resource intensive, and the fans automatically idle at night(so the computer is quieter). Your temps will skyrocket and it is very likely that the computer will explode or burst into flames. Don't chance it.

After reading all of the sarcastic responses I'm guessing the general message is it's fine to leave it on.

Yes there's a chance but not any more chance than as you are typing in a forum, in fact probably lesser so since your house will be cooler and the PC less active.

It's Adobe Flash you have to be careful of. That can burn out your computer*.

*If it's about 10 years old and been used and abused well beyond it's shelf life...

What do you think people did with 56k or other terrible internet speeds when they wanted to download?

kraken2109

Yep.

Back in the 90s it was common for people to have a second phone line just for the internet. One weekend we wanted to test downloading a 1GB file using our 33.6 modem. We got about 80 hours in and then the connection was lost (I think it was at about 90%).

Other than that, files were much smaller back then. Also to mitigate some of the connection slowness, my best friend and I set up a sneaker net using my external zip drive between our 2 houses, we had a universal list that we would maintain. And we would communicate via AIM or if the download was long enough (1 hour+) we would just go to the other's house and play dreamcast.

When my school got a computer lab in 1995 I was on it at all times because they had a faster internet connection. It took so long to download anything on my own bandwidth at home.
